Last Week in College Gym: June 4

During the offseason, it can be difficult to keep up with all the news and training updates happening across the teams. So each week, we will provide a curation of the most exciting upgrades, as well as other important news happening in the college gym world. Note the majority of the training updates highlighted will feature new skills and not someone training their same routine from the past season, for example.

Finally, note we are only able to share links to updates posted on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and not Instagram Stories or Snapchat. However, we will try to note any clips of note that we see on those disappearing platforms.

Kyla Ross Trains Bhardwaj

Is someone training to keep the Peng legacy alive? UCLA junior Kyla Ross competed a Bhardwaj in her final year of elite and looks to at least be playing around with bringing it back in college.

Marissa Oakley Trains Gainer Double Full

In a world of cookie-cutter gainer full dismounts, we are so here for Georgia sophomore Marissa Oakley working the beginning stages of a double twist. Don’t mind our drool.

Ivy Lu Trains Van Leeuwen

Minnesota junior and bar and beam specialist Ivy Lu is training a Van Leeuwen. Lu competed a shaposh + pak combination last year and finished the season tied for No. 5 on bars. She notched several 9.975s on the event in 2018.

Maddie Karr Trains Big Bar Upgrades

Denver junior Maddie Karr is playing with the early stages of a Tkatchev + immediate Pak combination, as well as a Bhardwaj (swipe to the second video). We’re dreaming of a Denver/UCLA meet with dueling Bhardwajs from Ross and Karr.

Bailey Ferrer Trains E Passes

Now that she’s announced her early arrival in Baton Rouge, incoming LSU freshman Bailey Ferrer is working toward a spot in the floor lineup, training both a Dos Santos and a full-in.

Mya Mulligan Works Unique Release Skill

Never heard of her? You will! Incoming Missouri freshman Mya Mulligan is training a Comaneci release at her home gym, Hawaiian Island Twisters. Check out that handstand afterward, too.

Instagram Story and Snapchat Roundup

Nia Dennis Landing Yurchenko 1.5

UCLA sophomore Nia Dennis is training a Yurchenko 1.5, landing it on a mat stack. UCLA should have more 10.0 vaults in 2018, with several in the freshman class, but an additional one is always welcome, and could also boost Dennis’ all around scores.

Mary Korlin-Downs Back on Bars, shows Beam Upgrades

After a host of injuries over the past few years, Minnesota redshirt junior and erstwhile beam specialist Mary Korlin-Downs is training bars again. She has also shown a front aerial to back tuck series on beam, which would be an upgrade from a side aerial back handspring.

Natalie Wojcik Trains Full-Twisting Double Layout

Michigan incoming freshman Natalie Wojcik posted a full-twisting double layout bar dismount to her Instagram Story, commenting that it is her dream skill. It’s unlikely we’ll see it in competition, but it is exciting to see the level 10 standout continue to add to her repertoire!
