leotards

Leotard Rankings: Week 15

It was the one weekend of the year where Division II teams (and those others with less than seven and a half full scholarships) got to be the stars with no overshadowing by bigger DI powerhouses. And many of the squads brought their leo A-game. Note that while some teams showed three leotards over the three days of competition, we only judges those that we haven’t analyzed in the past. The criteria is the same as always: up to three points for design; two points for fabric, sparkle, etc.; and two points for school spirit; three points for overall appearance. This week we’re bringing back all our guest judges from the season to take a look at teams’ nationals fashion.

Caroline: Another super classic design with the ombre and deep sparkle V. I do wish it had just a little more interest somewhere to catch the eye.

Christina: This is gorgeous! I love the pastel-like ombre and the V neckline with all the sparkles. Seriously so pretty.

Elizabeth: I looooove this! The colors used in the ombre are stunning, and the shimmeriness of the white is gorgeous. I love the neckline and V back and the Yale in the apex of that V as well.

Alicia: These colors fit together so perfectly. Sometimes dark to white ombre is really drastic but this is subtle and shows off school colors.

Emily HF: Sooo sooo pretty! Love the style of ombre here too; it’s perfectly blended. Sometimes you can get kind of harsh lines but not here. I wish they’d continued the sparkles or something under the arm—that mesh to fabric transition there is kinda odd.

Emily M: Oooh pretty. Yes please. Yale won the school color lottery, and this is a great way to showcase the blue and white. I like that the ombre continues on the mesh sleeves, and the crystal V is flattering. It’s very simple, but also very elegant. This is a favorite.

Rebecca: SO PRETTY. My only complaint here is that the mesh to primary fabric shift is just enough that it’s noticeable but looks unintentional… But otherwise it’s the best.

Tara: LOVE! The ombre is gorgeous, it has just the right amount of sparkle and adds in the school spirit factor with the “Yale” on the back. Great job on this one!

Caroline: Is this blue? Purple? The fact that I can’t tell is a problem in and of itself. I love the sweetheart neckline and the use of sparkle, but other than that it’s very simple, and at first glance I’d never guess it belonged to Penn.

Christina: This is very simple, but I find it beautiful. The shade of blue is lovely, and I love the sweetheart neckline. I love the V in the back as well.

Elizabeth: The leo was GORGEOUS in person and was so flattering on Caroline Moore. The sweetheart neckline paired with the stunning blue hue was great, and the addition of red rhinestones (you can’t really tell they’re red in the pics) topped it off.

Alicia: It’s not easy to do blue and blue without it looking flat but Penn makes it work by using only a slight shade difference! The blue is a beautiful color.

Emily HF: This neckline is gorgeous, I love the angles in it and it works really well with the sweetheart cut on the bodice. The royal blue is super pretty too. As always, colored rhinestones to add the other school color is a winning design choice for me.

Emily M: This is so simple yet so so lovely. I like that the mesh blue is slightly different, giving it some depth, the sweetheart neckline is pretty, and the crystals work for me.

Rebecca: I… kind of love the slight color difference. I love that it’s not too busy, and the sparkle fade down the front is GORGEOUS. Winner.

Tara: This just isn’t hitting the spot for me. It’s just too simple for my tastes. The neckline and choice of fabrics aren’t meshing for me nor is the neckline paired with the sweetheart shape at the fabric change flattering. But I do like the sparkles.

Caroline: This is a super classic, flattering look; I love the ombre sleeves and the muted red trim. I also don’t mind the inverse neckline as much as usual just because it’s more subtle here. And love the sparkle cascade!

Christina: Love the ombre! The big sparkly C in a nice touch on the front. The back design is fairly common, and I’m not a fan of it.

Elizabeth: I’m always a fan of ombre, and this white to black is so so pretty. I also like the small addition of red on the neckline and cuffs and the C on the front with surrounding sparkles.

Alicia: The dark ombre arms are everything to me.

Emily HF: Love love love the front of this and ombre anything, particularly sleeves, is always a win. That back though….hmm… I wish they’d done something different.

Emily M: Centenary getting in on the ombre sleeves tren—yes! I’m into the black and white, and the bronzy-red color on the neckline and sleeves is excellent. I’m not sure about the back, though, and that is one BIG C.

Rebecca: Oooh I love the ombre arms and the red collar and sleeve accents. I actually like the back, but could have done without the big C probably.

Tara: I really liked this until I saw the back. It’s a little incongruous for my tastes. I love the ombre sleeves and how the “C” is framed by sparkle lines on the front, but the back just doesn’t fit with the rest of the leo.

Caroline: The mix of lace and sparkle is nice and apparently it says Redhawks on the back, so there’s at least some school spirit. But I’m not a big fan of the all-black look.

Christina: I am torn. I usually like lace like this but maybe the monochrome look doesn’t work here for me. I need something to make it stand up a little more. It’s very elegant, but a hint of red would have been nice.

Elizabeth: This is one of the few lace leos I kind of like. The black body paired with black lace looks nice together and isn’t too plain for me. Plus the sweetheart neckline and sparkles are a nice touch.

Alicia: I love this! I’m picky with lace, but it works with the bottom half of the leo. I wish the rhinestones faded off better rather than stopping flat, but this is how lace should be done.

Emily HF: Lovely! All black with some sparkle and the lace sleeves just scream classy to me. I wish the border of the sweetheart didn’t cut off at the sides quite so abruptly, but overall this is gorgeous. Still on my kick of color in sparkles over here, so I wish there’d maybe been some red crystals intermixed.

Emily M: If you’re going to go all-in on lace, the rest of the leo better be pretty simple. So thank you SEMO for not going way overboard. The sweetheart neckline is nice, and the monochrome is a solid choice because the lace itself is so detailed. I’m not a huge lace fan, which makes this not my favorite of SEMO’s leos, but it isn’t bad by any means.

Rebecca: Beautiful and perfect!! I love lace, I love black and I love sweetheart fronts. My only complaint is that, like most leos, the pattern awkwardly cuts off under the arms? But aside from that, it’s perfect.

Tara: I love how elegant and classy this is with all-black paired with lace sleeves and the sparkle cascade on front. The back has “Redhawks,” which is a nice touch, but I wish there was more spirit. A hint of red, maybe?

Caroline: My biggest issue with this is the reverse V neckline—because otherwise it is gorgeous! I love the rich color, the back is so cute and I love the shimmer cascade by the school logo on the front. I need a competition version!

Christina: Nice one, although I’m not a fan of the reverse V neckline as I never find it flattering ever. The deep maroon and criss cross back is beautiful, though, and I’d love to see how this would look as a competition leo.

Elizabeth: This needs to be made into a competition leo stat because I love it. The shimmy white paired with the red go really well together, and I’m obsessed with the criss-cross and mesh back.

Alicia: The font really ruins an otherwise nice leo! The maroon is beautiful and the back is unique, but ugh–the font!

Emily HF: Oooooh. This is very nice. Agree reverse V isn’t the best, but this one isn’t bad at all to me.

Emily M: OH! Someone throw sleeves on these immediately so SPU can start competing in them. The dripping crystals on the front. The criss cross and mesh back. The deep maroon. Love.

Rebecca: I got to see this in meet warmups at UW earlier this year and love it to death. Any kind of back crisscross is the best, and thanks for not putting yellow on it.

Tara: This is a solid leo! I do agree with Alicia that the font isn’t the best, but the rest is nice. I love the criss-cross back, and maroon and white is a classic combo that is hard to mess up. Nice job, SPU!

Caroline: Faux one-shoulder designs need to stop being a thing; asymmetry isn’t always a bad thing, but this definitely throws off the visual line too much. I do like the Texas outline and the red/silver combo!

Christina: I am so here for the Texas state outline. The rest of the leo is a bit too simple for me, and I’ve never been too keen on the grey. But I do like the shade of crimson used.

Elizabeth: This definitely isn’t my favorite TWU leo, but it’s not bad either. I like the graphite and crimson combo and am obsessed with the texas outline on the hip. The TWU on the back was another nice touch.

Alicia: I love the red and gray colors, but it doesn’t work together. The Texas outline is perfect, though.

Emily HF: I don’t actually mind the red and grey and the Texas outline is great, but that single faux strap seems to be in now, and I don’t like it….

Emily M: My absolute favorite thing about this leo is the Texas state outline on the hip. Hey, when you’re the only program in the state, live it up! And since the leo is otherwise pretty simple, the state doesn’t make it over the top. The TWU on the back is nice, and the colors work well. Very solid leo for me, and full marks on school spirit.

Rebecca: I really like this one. The pointy shoulder action is great, and I love the colors and the fact that it’s not too busy.

Tara: This isn’t my favorite TWU leo, but it’s a solid one nevertheless. I enjoy how they added the Texas state outline on the hip, and the TWU on the back is a good touch. But the rest is kind of meh to me.

Caroline: How many times can the same leo be used in the same meet? Apparently the answer is three. I like that we get a wider variety of color here, though, but I do wish there was a logo or some more sparkle here.

Christina: I sound like a broken record, but this design has been overused even though I like it. The colors here work well together, though.

Elizabeth: I guess if everyone and their mother is going to have this design, at least it’s not a bad one. I’m really digging the blue color used here, and it paired well with the black.

Alicia: I LOVE THIS! I love the three colors—it really adds depth, and the color contrast isn’t so dramatic that it’s distracting. Everything blends so well!

Emily HF: This is very pretty just… I really wish this design wasn’t used so much. There’s nothing in particular I dislike about it but also nothing that really makes it stand out from the others.

Emily M: Here we go again. I like the use of colors on this one. The black body is nice and the blue mesh works, plus the white is a nice pop of brightness.

Rebecca: Yeah, this is the same leotard as West Chester and Bridgeport, and I still like it. I don’t love the blue mesh color with the black—it comes out a little purpley—but I love anything primarily black.

Tara: It’s a very similar design to both WCU and Bridgeport (really though, how does this happen?), but that doesn’t change how much I like it. The color combination is lovely, and again it has the perfect amount of sparkle.

Caroline: This design has become really commonplace recently, but the purple and gold combination works nicely here and showcases the school spirit. I love the peppering of sparkles and the ram on the hip, too.

Christina: I love this shade of purple! The design itself is very common, and I feel like everybody has it (although I do like it). But it does work well here with the yellow and gold.

Elizabeth: This shade of purple is really pretty and definitely popped on the competition floor. I liked the small addition of yellow/gold since those colors are typically blah together. The fact that about 60 other teams had this design, though, takes some points away.

Alicia: I love purple leos, but this is a LOT of purple that’s overwhelming. The purple mesh is beautiful, though.

Emily HF: This purple hue is so so pretty, it can be a little much, though. The little details like the ram on the hip really make this one for me.

Emily M: This is a design we see a fair bit, but the bright purple really makes this one pop. I’m generally not a fan of Vs this deep, but something about the monochrome of the mesh and the body makes this less egregious than most. I’m in love with the tiny ram on the hip: Bonus school spirit points for that detail.

Rebecca: I love this pattern despite it being straight out of the catalog. But the purple is a lot, but the little ram head on the hip is pretty cute, though.

Tara: Ooh! I love this! It has just the right of sparkle and the design on the front is lovely. The ram on the hip is a great way to incorporate school spirit without being too overbearing. Overall a nice leo!

Caroline: Case in point as to this design’s ubiquity. I do like the pop of color it provides on the black, but like, why go all-black in the first place? I also wish there were more sparkle and a UB logo somewhere.

Christina: Much like WCU’s, this design is too common at this point even though I like it. However, the colors chosen are a bit too dark for me—although it does create an elegant look. I do wish there was more school spirit.

Elizabeth: Of the leos in this design I saw this weekend (even of the ones featured in this post), this one probably ranks third? The black and purple combo is nice, but the greyish-black sleeve mesh is off to me. It needs more sparkle or flash.

Alicia: You don’t see black and purple together often, and I love how this is done. I’m a sucker for pops of color so the purple lining and rhinestones bring out depth in a dark leo.

Emily HF: So this design was used a lot this weekend. This one stands out to me, though, with the all-black and just the hint of purple. And it’s a win for having some purple in the crystals.

Emily M: Hi hello again design everyone has. This one really stands out to me, though. I like the black and purple! It’s a very elegant look.

Rebecca: Living for all the black this week. This is literally the same pattern as West Chester’s this week, but it’s gorgeous. Having the right colors is pretty much enough school spirit for me.

Tara: Ooh. The black and purple are lovely together, and it has just the right amount of sparkle (and purple rhinestones!). I do wish it said “Purple Knights” or “Bridgeport” somewhere, but overall it’s a win for me!

Caroline: This is different than most leos we see today, though I’m not sure in the best way? The all black is a bit blah, and I can’t stand that neckline. But I’m kind of in love with the B wrapped in ivy! A very cool touch.

Christina: This is alright, although I’m not a fan of the neckline. I love the Ivy on the B on the front, though.

Elizabeth: I actually liked this one compared to a lot I saw this weekend. The B logo with Ivy is a nice change and the classic black looked good on the gymnasts.

Alicia: I love the B in the front with the ivy around it. The green is a nice pop of color in an otherwise dark and flat leo.

Emily HF: I agree the ivy around the B is my favorite part, and I never mind an all black leo—just not so sure about that neckline.

Emily M: I’m obsessed with the Ivy on the B. Such a fun detail. Brown’s colors are unforgiving at best, so I appreciate the black with that bit of green. I like the neckline as well. Overall, my only complaint is the simplicity. The bodice could use a little something more.

Rebecca: I’m not certain about the neckline, but I love the B on the front and I’m always a big proponent of all-black leos.

Tara: I like this, but I don’t love it. The B is a nice touch, and I like the sparkles on the sleeves. But the neckline isn’t doing it for me.

Caroline: This is… wow. Very in your face with the school spirit, though I am missing their usual gold accents. The logo and the sparkle are too overwhelming to really serve any aesthetic purpose.

Christina: The “Lions” on the front is quite overwhelming. The sparkles are a bit big and almost look like polka dots from away. I like the shiny neckline and cuffs, but overall this is way too in your face for me.

Elizabeth: Like TWU, this isn’t my favorite Lindenwood leo, but I still enjoy it. I like the classic black with sequins carefully placed all over, and the shiny cuffs are another great edition. I just wish LIONS was a tad smaller.

Alicia: “Lions” is a bit too large for my liking and it reads more like “ION.” The massive rhinestone waterfall in the neckline is fantastic.

Emily HF: This one of four main leos I know of for them, with the new one this year. Unfortunately it’s my least favorite of the four. Love the ones from team quals and finals, but there isn’t enough shape to this one for me.

Emily M: No no nooo no no. I love some of Lindenwood’s leos, but this one makes me cringe. The “LIONS” is just too big, and the crystal pattern is aggressive. I do appreciate that it is all black behind the chaos, though.

Rebecca: If you’ve been paying attention you know I don’t do large words… But you can’t dock them on the sparkle here. Not my favorite LU leotard.

Tara: Well school spirit sure is happening here. I think this is almost as bad for me as a huge mascot or logo. The individual components are nice, especially the rhinestones, but overall it’s just too much to handle.

Caroline: Random swirlies have never been my fave; That is the sole focus of this design, so it’s a pass for me. It definitely embodies the “Big Red” moniker of the school, but I can’t say that’s necessarily a good thing.

Christina: This is alright, and I wish there were more variations in the shades. I am not a fan of the random swirls on the arms either.

Elizabeth: Meh. This design is fine but nothing special. It actually made me keep thinking of the Cortland State Red Dragons team because of the sparkle design on it. It is a nice red color, though.

Alicia: I love the color of red, but there needs to be some depth and and a pop of something. It’s too flat for that vibrant a color.

Emily HF: Pet peeve: leos that look like the sparkles are meant to look like something but don’t actually. I spend way too much time trying to figure them out, and it’s distracting. Also, the cut seems a little odd; there’s a lot of bunching happening—not sure if it’s the cut or just the fabric.

Emily M: Am I looking at…dragons? What is going on with these wild swirls? This leo is a lot. I like the vibrant red, but I’d love to see another color incorporated somehow to add some depth, and I just don’t get the wild crystals. It looks like it says “Cornell” on the back?

Rebecca: I liked Cornell’s team final leo better… this one is just a little plain, and the sparkle pattern is confusing. But full points for team spirit, since it does have a Big amount of Red.

Tara: This just isn’t working for me. The sparkle swirls on the arms seem like they were just randomly placed there, and they don’t flow nicely with the rest of the leo. The front is nice, but the arms are just too much.

Caroline: This feels a little too club and a little too tacky for me. The sparkle is almost overdone and the swirls are just blah. The one high point of this is the school spirit—total Americana feel, and they still get the AF logo in there.

Christina: This isn’t my favorite Air Force leo, and we’ve seen much nicer ones from it this season. The design  is just common, overdone and is too busy for me.

Elizabeth: Let me tell you all a story: I thought Air Force did a good job with its leos this weekend and assumed this one was all they had left really for event finals. However, then I discovered they had a gorgeous ombre one in their back pocket that they didn’t even wear and got irrationally mad. This has never been my fave AF leo—the design is too JO-y, and the mostly white is blah. You can do better AF. I’ve seen it.

Alicia: Great use of school spirit, but it’s too busy. And the swirl designs are definitely overdone.

Emily HF: Way too busy for me, and I share Elizabeth’s irrational anger about the leo they didn’t wear that was super pretty.

Emily M: Oh my. This reminds me of an Illinois leo (navy with the big middle swoosh in orange), and I’m not a fan of either iteration. Red, white and blue are rough colors to do without looking very JO-straight-out-of-the-GK-catalog, but AF has done better with other leos. This one makes me feel like I should stand up and start reciting the pledge. Just busy and a lot.

Rebecca: Ehh Air Force you can do better. There’s way too much going on here, and the blue is… a bit too blue for the rest?

Tara: AF is killing it with school spirit here, but I think it’s just too many colors combined with the swirl pattern. I normally like sparkles, but the ones that outline the swirl at the bottom aren’t doing it for me, either.
