The Dismount: Week 9

By Christina Marmet, Elizabeth Grimsley and Caroline Medley

What a weekend. The high scores were flying, rivalries were fierce and perfect 10s ran aplenty. While teams like Oklahoma had a dip, others like LSU, SUU and ASU had season or program bests— the Sundevils with their highest score since 2014 and an upset over in-state rival Arizona!
No. 1 Oklahoma at No. 11 Michigan
Full Results | OU: 197.575 | UM: 197.525
VT: Jackson, Dowell, McLean 9.900 | UB: Nichols 10.000 | BB: Capps 10.000 | FX: Artz 9.975 | AA: Karas 39.600This meet ended surprisingly closely, with Michigan almost upsetting Oklahoma in the last rotation. The Sooners were still resting Maggie Nichols, who only competed bars there. However, she obtained a 10.000 on the event and thus earned her “Gym Slam,”

only after two months of competing in the NCAA. No big deal or anything. Now, onto the Perfect 40.0, right? Senior Chayse Capps also scored a 10.000 of her own on balance beam, which clinched the win for OU. Despite these scores, the Sooners looked a bit tired and tentative on their landings, and this was their third meet in eight days. On the other hand, Michigan celebrated its two seniors Talia Chiarelli and Nicole Artz as they both led the team to its season-high. The Wolverines closed the gap with the Sooners in the last rotation with fantastic floor routines, and it added even more excitement to the meet as the final result came down to the last routine for both teams. Additionally, fans also finally got a glimpse of Brianna Brown on bars for an exhibition, and we certainly hope to see her in the lineups soon.
No. 3 Florida at No. 2 LSU
Full Results | LSU: 198.150 | UF: 196.600
VT: McMurtry, Gnat 10.000 | UB: Finnegan, Priessman 9.925 | BB: Macadaeg 9.950 | FX: Gnat 9.950 | AA: Boren 39.550Well, it was just not Florida’s day, and the troubles started on the very first routine for the Gators with Maegan Chant hitting her foot on her tap before her dismount on bars and nearly face planting. The issues continued with Alex McMurtry falling over on a handstand, Amanda Cheney grabbing the beam to save a fall and Rachel Gowey

and Grace McLaughlin having mishaps on floor. But the meet wasn’t a total wash, despite the 196.600 total score. Alex McMurtry scored a perfect 10 on vault for her beautifully stuck double-twisting Yurchenko to follow up LSU’s Ashleigh Gnat’s identical score on the event. Speaking of the Tigers, the team was ON Sunday, notching a season-high and the third-best score in program history in front of nearly 13,000 fans. While there were mistakes, the highlights outshone them. Erin Macadaeg scored a 9.950 in the leadoff position on beam, Ruby Harrold and Sydney Ewing  tallied 9.925s on vault, Sarah Finnegan and Lexie Priessman earned 9.925s on bars, Finnegan added another 9.925 on floor alongside Hambrick and Ewing’s and Gnat added a 9.925 on beam and a 9.950 on floor to perfect mark in the first rotation. The win also secured the insignificant but still notable SEC regular season title for the Tigers.
No. 19 California at No. 4 UCLA
Full Results | UCLA: 197.525 | Cal: 196.800
VT: Ross 9.875 | UB: Ross, Lee 9.975 | BB: Ohashi 10.000 | FX: Ohashi 9.925 | AA: Kocian 39.325In front of a record-setting crowd of over 12,000, UCLA posted a 197.525 to hold steady in the standings and defeat California Sunday afternoon. The score, largely helped along by Katelyn Ohashi’s first career perfect 10 on beam and Kyla Ross and Peng-Peng Lee’s 9.975s (bars and bars/beam, respectively), the Bruins added one more

197 to an already impressive RQS calculation. While the landings still aren’t quite there on vault and floor, the team made up for it on bars and beam, tallying matching 49.550s. Madison Kocian also didn’t have a great meet, showing some uncharacteristic hiccups here and there. But it didn’t matter as the team was able to drop both her low scores on bars and beam. California also had a great meet, posting a 196.800 on the road to make a case for the final night spot at the Pac-12 championship. Despite another setback with Sylvie Seilnacht breaking a bone in her hand after tripping over a backpack earlier in the week, the team showed it wasn’t fazed, collecting its fourth-highest beam total in program history with a 49.325, including 9.875s from Zoe Draghi and Sofie Seilnacht. But, like the Bruins, the team will need to focus on landings on vault and floor if it wants to make another national championship trip in about a month’s time.
No. 33 Stanford at No. 5 Utah
Full Results | Utah: 197.500 | Stanford: 196.275
VT: Skinner 9.950 | UB: Price, Skinner 9.950 | BB: McNair, Rowe 9.875 | FX: Skinner 10.000 | AA: Rowe, Skinner 39.650It was an emotional senior night for Utah’s lone fourth-year Baely Rowe. As the fans said goodbye to a great competitor, Rowe went out in style, scoring a 9.900 on vault, 9.900 on bars, 9.875 on beam and huge 9.975 on floor. But the loudest cheers didn’t

come for her scores but her moonwalk as she performed the Michael Jackson tribute for the final time inside the Huntsman Center in front of 15,000 fans. MyKayla Skinner also had standout performance, finally earning a much-desired perfect 10 for her floor routine and notching 9.950s on vault and bars as well. She still managed to win the all around, tying with Rowe, despite a 9.750 on beam that included an interesting wave-like save on a wobble. Stanford also shouldn’t be forgotten as the Cardinal posted its second-highest score of the season 196.275 after struggling most of the season to even manage 195s. Elizabeth Price was the team’s savior as always, tallying 9.950s on bars and floor, as well as a 9.925 on vault.
No. 6 Alabama at No. 8 Georgia
Full Results | Ala: 197.700 | UGA: 197.325
VT: Snead: 9.950 | UB: Schick, Winston 9.925 | BB: Guerrero 9.950 | FX: Marino, Winston 9.950 | AA: Winston 39.650In the 142nd meeting between these two historic rivals, Alabama got the better of Georgia after the Gymdogs had mistakes on beam. However, the hometown Dogs still put up a season high by about three tenths and will take the performance and run with it. But it wasn’t for lack of trying as the team

even wore its “upset leotards”—those worn in its past two upsets over top teams in 2015 and 2016. Alabama also performed exceptional, putting up a strong number on the road, even without the help of consistent leadoff performer Keely McNeer who broke her pinky finger in a car accident Thursday. She’s expect to start slowly coming back in two weeks. Each team had bright spots and some hardships. It was the Tide, though, that limited the downward dips. Kiana Winston scored a 9.925 on bars and a 9.950 on floor to share the win on each event. Snead was also shaping back into form after being out with a back injury, posting a 9.95o on vault. Ashlyn Broussard fell on beam for the Gymdogs, and Rachel Schick had a start value issue on her routine, but the team rallied for a total still surpassing 49.
No. 25 Ohio State at No. 7 Denver
Full Results | DU: 197.150 | Ohio State: 195.475
VT: Karr 9.875 | UB: Chesnok 9.925 | BB: Ross 9.900 | FX: Addison 9.925 | AA: Karr 39.475Denver continued its magical season with yet another 197, this time with a 197.150 at home, good enough to keep it in the top 10 another week. But the real milestone for this team came from putting up six gymnasts in the floor lineup, making it all that more impressive that the team has done so well with limited depth and five-up-five-count on some events. Freshman Maddie Karr continued her breakout season, winning vault and the all around. Nikole Addison,

Diana Chesnok and Julia Ross also maintained their fantastic 9.9+ levels of gymnastics on each of their signature events with a 9.925, 9.925 and 9.900, respectively. What sets the Pioneers apart is this standout routine or two on each event, giving it the extra boost so many of the big-name teams have. Ohio State also put up a respectable mid-195 on the road in its second competition against Denver in as many meets.
No. 17 Washington at No. 9 Oregon State
Full Results | OSU: 197.325 | UW: 196.450
VT: Gardiner, Roy 9.900 | UB: Aufiero 9.975 | BB: Dessaints, Gardiner 9.950 | FX: McMillan 9.925 | AA: McMillan 39.625While not the highest-profile meet happening Sunday afternoon, it certainly didn’t disappoint those fans watching. Oregon State hit a huge 197.325 for a season high and second 197 of the season and keeping it in the top 10 in the country with a good chance at advancing to nationals. The real stars of the night came from the

Beavers’ usual players in Maddie Gardiner, who won vault (9.900) and beam (9.950) and Kaytianna McMillan on floor (9.925) and in the all around (39.625). Dani Dessaints also showed up on beam for a 9.950 and Erika Aufiero had a near-perfect performance on bars for a 9.975. Washington also put up another solid-but-not-stellar number with a mid-196. However, the number might not be enough to hold off California for the last Pac-12 night session slot as the Bears went near-197 on the road at UCLA.
No. 22 Utah State at No. 10 Boise State
Full Results | Boise State: 196.700 | USU: 195.675
VT: Bir 9.850 | UB: Remme 9.900 | BB: Remme 9.900 | FX: Collantes, Stockwell 9.925 | AA: Remme 38.700These two MRGC teams matched up once more, this time for the annual Pink Meet at the Taco Bell Arena. The Broncos started out a little rough on vault, with all around star Shani Remme having to bail on her vault

attempt after a botched block. However, she and the team came back on bars, with Remme scoring a 9.9 and the team going 49.25 for the rotation. Beam and floor continued to build, culminating in a 49.3 floor total and a solid 196.7, a half tenth higher than the score they’ll replace in their RQS calculation. Utah State, on the other hand, had a solid first two rotations, though their landings on vault still need some work. Things began to go awry on floor, as Jazmyn Estrella had some problems, coming up with a 9.575. All arounder Bailey McIntire also fell on beam, which allowed Remme to still win the AA title, but the Aggies stayed strong and were able to count five hits in both rotations. Their mid-195 total won’t help their RQS much, and neither will their total from Sunday against SJSU, so they’ll have to hope for a better outing next week against Southern Utah.
