The Code of Points is a confusing mess. We wanted to break it down and make it more digestible. This hub includes all of the information from the Code pertinent to the NCAA, from routine requirements to common skill values.
General Rules & Meet Day Info
General Deductions
- 0.10 from team score for competing out of order
- 0.20 deduction from a gymnast’s routine for technical verbal cues from a coach
- 0.05 Failure to hold finishing position (legs straight, arms up) for one second on vault, bars, or beam. Any additional arm, foot, or body movements to maintain control upon landing are deductions.
Range of Scoring
All counting scores on a panel must be within the below range of score, as determined by the average of all counting scores. If scores are out of range, the chief judge will call a judging conference and scores will be adjusted to be within the allowable range.
9.80 – 10.0 regular season – within 0.1 (0.2 post season)
9.50 – 9.775 – within 0.2
9.0 – 9.475 – within 0.3
8.0 – 8.975 – within 0.5
Below 8.0 – within 1.0
Uniform Rules
- Gymnasts may compete in their preference of spandex shorts or leggings with their leotards, as long as they are consistent among other athletes choosing the same uniform combination (i.e. all athletes wearing a leotard and shorts must have the same uniform, but althletes can choose whether or not to compete in shorts or only a leotard).
- No rules about logos/patches (ex. on wristbands, grips, slogans/names etc. on leo—think the “#RaiseHigh” hashtag on George Washington’s leo or “YES” on Oklahoma’s)
- Names (first initial and last) are allowed on leo if the whole team is same size and font
- Gymnasts out of uniform will incur a 0.30 deduction for their team if they are out of uniform following a warning from the Meet Referee.
- 0.2 deduction for any jewelry other than stud piercings.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct
- Any member of the team (coach, staff, athlete): first time earns a warning (yellow card), second time earns a 0.1 deduction from the team score. This can be the same or different team member.
All college events start out of a 9.40 start value—except vault, which has different start values based on the difficulty of the vault performed—and build to a 10.0 with special requirements, connection bonus and difficulty bonus. Deductions are taken for errors in execution or composition of the routine. Each event is slightly different, so we created a page for each, including requirements, skill values and common deductions.
