Last Week in College Gym: June 15

During the offseason, it can be difficult to keep up with all the news and training updates happening across the country. So each week, we will provide a curation of the most exciting upgrades, as well as other important news happening in the college gym world. Note the majority of the training updates highlighted will feature new skills and not, for example, someone training their same routine from the past season.

Finally, note we are only able to share links to updates posted on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and not Instagram Stories or Snapchat. However, we will try to note any clips of note that we see on those disappearing platforms.

Of course, even with eight editors scouring social media for clips, we’ll still miss updates from time to time. Let us know in the comments or on social media if we didn’t include a new skill, injury comeback or more from someone on your favorite team!

Jade Degouveia Looks to Add Bars

The Sooner senior has predominantly competed vault and floor during her time at Oklahoma, but she recently posted a video of herself training a partial bar routine complete with a Jaeger and Pak salto. Her caption implies that she hasn’t been able to train bars lately, mentioning that her bars comeback is starting.

Maggie Nichols Plays With New Connections

Oklahoma senior Maggie Nichols is training a couple new connections—Ray + Pak salto + van Leeuwen—on bars, as well as showing a front aerial + back handspring + layout step-out on beam.

Louisa Marie Knapp Unveils Training Vlog

Alaska’s redshirt junior has a new vlog documenting her summer training. In addition to various upgrades on bars, she’s also working on a new beam routine that includes a back handspring step-out to either a back pike or tucked Arabian and has resumed training vault—a Yurchenko full—for the first time in nearly five years.

Instagram Stories and Snapchat Roundup

Jessie Bastardi Trains Full-in and Beam Dismount Upgrade

National qualifier on beam and Penn State redshirt sophomore Jessie Bastardi posted a full-in to her Instagram Story. She hasn’t competed floor since 2017 J.O. nationals. She also posted training a side aerial to back double full dismount on beam.

Savannah Remkus Back on Bars

The Illinois State junior competed vault, beam and floor during her freshman and sophomore campaigns; Remkus posted a Jaeger to her Instagram Story, captioned “first in months.”

Lexi Graber Working New Bars Combo

The Alabama junior said she’ll “hopefully” be upgrading her bars routine alongside a video of her training a Ray. She competed bars in all but two meets in 2019.

Danica Abanto Upgrades Bar Dismount

Ohio State’s Abanto posted a full-twisting double tuck bar dismount to her Instagram Story.

Nicolette DiPrisco Trains Switch Ring on Beam

The Northern Illinois sophomore, who competed beam twice for the huskies in 2019, was seen training a switch ring leap on beam in her instagram Story.

Sarah Shaffer Tries New Bars Release

Arkansas redshirt senior Sarah Shaffer showed a toe-on on bars. She competed the event in every meet in 2019.

Mollie Korth Throws Two New Passes

The Kentucky senior showed she’s ready to keep that anchor lineup spot by throwing two new passes into the pit: a triple twist and a double Arabian. She hinted in her Story that next year’s routine could consist of three different passes than she had competed before.

Karen Howell Works Maloney

Howell has previously competed sets constructed around a pike Jaeger and Pak or bail handstand in her first three seasons at Illinois; adding a Maloney to her repertoire would open up more options.

Sandra Elsadek Trains New Beam Combination

The Ball State sophomore posted a video to her Instagram Story of a cat leap connected to a side aerial. Esladek was a staple for the Cardinals on beam in her freshman season.

Claire Bonacorsi Making Comeback on Bars

Bonacorsi, who was only able to compete in two meets in 2019 due to injury, was spotted training a Tkachev on bars.

Lindsey Bates Returns From Injury

The SEMO junior was seen training a piked Jaeger on her Instagram Story this week. Bates was a regular contributor on bars and vault her freshman year, but a knee injury sidelined her during the 2019 season.
