LIVE BLOG: Corvallis Regional Round Two Session Two

For those who joined us earlier, welcome back to Gill Coliseum. If you’re just tuning in, we’re glad to have you in Corvallis for what should be a thrilling second session.

Tonight features UCLA, Minnesota, Iowa, and the round-one winner battling for two spots in Sunday’s regional final, alongside a handful of individual competitors.

No. 4 UCLA is both the fan and statistical favorite to advance—and to take the top spot. The Bruins have been on a tear all season and will be tough to beat if they hit.

The real battle, though, is shaping up between Minnesota and Iowa for the second qualifying position. In our simulations, Minnesota advances 71.7% of the time compared to Iowa’s 28.5%, but the margin is far from insurmountable.

Iowa opened the season with a shaky performance in a tri-meet that included both Utah and Minnesota, but has since rebounded well. The Hawkeyes claimed the top spot at their session of the Big Ten championship, finishing fifth overall. Minnesota, meanwhile, placed third overall at Big Tens behind Michigan State and UCLA, continuing to show the scoring potential needed to contend here.

With UCLA likely setting the pace, all eyes will be on the Gophers and Hawkeyes in what could be a tight race for the final qualifying spot.

The meet, as all regionals sessions, will be streamed on ESPN+, and scores can be found on Virtius.

Washington advanced over San Jose yesterday, so we’ll be seeing the individuals from San Jose this session.

Individuals this session are:

Kaviana Jurries, San Jose

Mikaela Pitts, San Jose

Sophie Patterson, San Jose

Samantha Macasu, San Jose

The 10 by Tran is the first in Iowa history on bars! And helped set a team program record on bars. Not too shabby for the first event out of the gate. Washington added nearly half a point from its showing on beam yesterday. UCLA is headed to bars and can make up some ground, although the Hawkeyes can go 49.2500 or better on beam.

Rotation 2: Minnesota VT, UCLA UB, Iowa BB, Washington FX

Lin (UW): FHS front double full, looks like she got that completely around fine. RO 1.5 to front lay, not as much rise but still good height.

McWilliams (UW): RUDi to loso. Switch half to popa is dreamy. Switch side straddle series, no notes. Double pike, quick lunge back.

Bolden (UW): FTDB, chest a little low but gets that around no issue. Switch half to wolf. Great routine, looked even better than yesterday.

AFTER TWO: UCLA 98.575, Iowa 98.550, Minnesota 98.125, Washington 98.100

The Bruins bounced back after a low score on bars, while Iowa was crushing it on beam. Who will take that second spot for the team could very well come down to the last rotation. Karenbauer (Iowa): Double pike, controlled lunge. Quick lunge back in her double tuck. Strong routine.

Tyson (Iowa): FHS rudi loso. Puts her hands down on her last pass.

FINAL: UCLA 197.450, Minnesota 196.900, Iowa 196.750, Washington 195.850

Minnesota is just too hot to beat on beam, and although Iowa had a solid vault outing, it just wasn’t enough to catch the Gophers. However, Iowa had a fabulous overall meet and has nothing to go home feeling bad about.
