LIVE BLOG: No. 32 Washington at No. 22 Maryland

Tonight features a coast-to-coast conference dual as Washington heads east to face Maryland, with both teams looking to build momentum as the season heats up. In its home opener, Maryland swept the team title and all four event titles while posting a solid 195.700. If the Terps can sustain that energy and build on the score, they should once again be in position to make a postseason run. Significant roster turnover may test the teamโ€™s experience, but Maryland is far from out of the conversation. Look for Madeline Komoroskiโ€™s elegant consistency, Taylor Rechโ€™s power on the leg events, and transfer Katrina Mendez-Abolnikโ€™s Yurchenko one and a half, which fits seamlessly into the Terpsโ€™ vault lineup.

Washington, meanwhile, continues a lengthy road stretch, competing nearly as far from home as possible. The Huskies enter with two meets already on the books and a full-point swing between those team totals. A bars underperformance and beam inconsistencies stalled the momentum built in the season opener, but the potential remains evident. Mary McDonough and Kristin Lin have shown the ability to steady lineups once early-season rust is shaken off. Tonight presents an opportunity for Washington to clean up details, regain confidence, and remind the gymternet that these Huskies still have plenty of bite.

This meet will be streamed on BIG+ at 7:30 p.m. ET, and scores can be found on Virtius. Not a B1G+ subscriber? Sign up today for the monthly pass with the code COLLEGEGYM3 for just $10.99/month (regularly $12.99/month).

Coming to you live from the Xfinity Center! The Terps ran an intense hype video, and we are, in fact, hyped. Let’s get it started!

Rotation 1: Maryland VT, Washington UB

Kogler (UMD): Yurchenko full, clean form and a small hop back, 9.800

McWilliams (UW): Straddle Jaeger to bail, hits handstand, DLO with leg separation, squatty hop forward, 9.700

Engelmayer (UMD): Y-full stuck! Good distance and height. 9.825

Lin (UW): Huge Gienger, breaks the connection to the bail and takes an extra swing, high but a bit of a delayed twist FTDT dismount. 9.125

Reade (UMD): Y full, twists slightly early off the table, hops back. 9.800

Oppegard (UW): Piked Jaeger, bail to handstand is clean, she’s hitting her handstands well, DLO and steps forward, 9.825

Rech (UMD): Y-full, excellent form and legs glued, nearly sticks it, 9.825

Moody (UW): Maloney to Pak, FTDT with an effortless stuck landing, 9.850

Buckmon (UMD): Clean Y-full, hop back, 9.750

McDonough (UW): Short on first handstand, closeee on the straddle Jaeger, bail, blind full is right on top of the bar, double tuck and hops back. They’re playing an ear-shattering “jet two holiday” remix. 9.275, I must have missed something there.

Mendez-Abolnik (UMD): Y-1.5, lots of distance and a big step forward, 9.850

Tubbs (UW): Maloney, bail right to handstand and holds it, textbook DLO, tiniest hop back. 9.700

Ex- Komoroski (UMD): Y-full, a little underpowered and steps forward.

Ex- Mouyenga (UW): Maloney bail, double tuck doesn’t get much air.

Ex- Mullen (UMD): Y-full, low and steps forward similar to Komoroski.

AFTER ONE: Maryland 49.100, Washington 48.200

Not a great start for the Huskies. An series of unfortunate errors from typically-reliable routines forced the Huskies to count a routine with errors. A clean rotation for the Terps has them counting only scores at 9.800 and above. Relying mostly on Yurchenko full vaults, the Terps dialed in their landings tonight to put them ahead.

Rotation 2: Washington VT, Maryland UB

Saville (UMD): The sole returning bars routine. Maloney to Pak some leg separation, saves the low bar handstand from going over, big DLO, steps forward. 9.700

McWilliams (UW): Yurchenko full and nails the landing. 9.725

Buckmon (UMD): Tight handstand, Shaposh, doesn’t get the grip and comes off the bar. Does it again, comes off again. Not them playing One More Time…, Jumps straight to the high bar, finishes with a blind full, double tuck, small step.

Tubbs (UW): A tall Y-full, lands chest low and steps forward. 9.525

Ruffing (UMD): Snappy handstands! Jaeger to bail is good, archy DLO, big hop back. 9.675

Lin (UW): Y-full, slightly forward on the table for my comfort, hops in place. 9.625

Reade (UMD): Hop blind half, Gienger to bail, floaty DLO, step. 9.725

Schaffer (UW): Y-full, pikes down and a hop back. 9.800

Dennis (UMD): Piked Jaeger to bail, toe on pike half, nearly sticks but some foot adjustments. 9.825

Bolden (UW): Y-full, powerful and clean, hops backward. 9.800

Komoroski (UMD): Bit of a judging delay. Straddle Jaeger, handstand thru to bail, her legs are glued, DLO, pikes down and steps forward. 9.725

McDonough (UW): Yurchenko tuck-ish half and sits it down. Grabs her ankle for a moment before getting up. I hope that isn’t a lasting injury. 8.400

Ex- Bingham (UMD): Tkachev, bail handstand is slightly crooked from my angle. Quick DLO hop back.

Ex- Crochet (UMD): Tkachev, Pak, great pointy toes! Double tuck and stumble back a bit.

AFTER TWO: Maryland 97.625, Washington 96.800

Bars is not the Terps’ strongest event, and while they put up solid routines, landing deductions and form breaks ruled the scoring outcomes for a mediocre showing overall. The Huskies lagged a bit in their second rotation as well, with Schaffer and Bolden posting a pair of 9.8’s for the Huskies’ best scores on vault. A few uncharacteristic mistakes from McDonough has hurt the Huskies performance tonight, as well.

Rotation 3: Maryland BB, Washington FX

Bingham (UMD): BHS LOSO, emphasizes the solid landing, cat leap side aerial, possibly a missed connection with that foot adjustment? Check on her jump series, RO 1.5, small hop. 9.700

Hallinan (UW): Front lay, front full, pike, quick and clean. RO double tuck, chest low, 180 leaps, quite cinematic music. 9.650

Reade (UMD): They are blasting Chapell Roan yes, BHS LOSO very small hip wobble, switch half is a little low, RO 1.5 to stick! 9.775

Schaffer (UW): Front double full, a little bit of cross-step, back 2.5, back 1.5 to layout good. 9.725

DeFrees (UMD): BHS LOSO, leans in the shoulders, side aerial, switch side is confident, RO double full, cross-legged but drills the landing. 9.875

Nguyen (UW): Front full layout, misses the punch and sits it down, her switch ring is lightning fast and pretty, double pike to finish, lands well. 9.050

Dennis (UMD): Wolf full done nicely, BHS LOSO solid. Front aerial no issues. Sheep jump! Needle scale! I’m impressed. BHS gainer full, hops in place. 9.775

Lin (UW): Waiting for scores. FHS double full, not enough rotation and falls. Back 1.5 front lay, makes it look easy. Leaps are very clean. FHS 1.5, lands, but looks like she’s out of juice. 9.150

Kogler (UMD): No wobbles on leaps, BHS BHS LOSO done nicely. Standing gainer full, throws it to the side, hops. 9.700

McWilliams (UW): Fun music, Rudi LOSO floats, I love a Shushunova! Excellent double pike to end. 9.825

Komoroski (UMD): Iconic flexibility showcase to mount, one arm BHS LOSO, no movement. Front aerials like a magnet. Iffy connection on jump series, RO 1.5 dismount, steps forward. 9.825

McDonough (UW): It looks like the weird vault landing didn’t have any lasting effects. Rudi LOSO, nice. 180 leaps, FHS double full to finish. 9.650

Ex- Engelmayer (UMD): Split ring jump, BHS LOSO, big hip break but stays on. Side aerial to two feet is solid, side aerial layout quick 1.5 to dismount, small hop and step.

Ex- Rak (UW): Double full to tuck, low but saves the landing with a hop. Punch 1.5, soft form, pulls it around

Ex- Buckmon (UMD): Interesting flairs in her mount, switch jump to kickover, leaps 180 but a hip break in the combo, BHS LOSO, too much juice: lifts her leg and steps back. BHS gainer full, steps forward but I like that she landed right next to the beam.

AFTER THREE: Maryland 146.575, Washington 144.800

McWilliams headlines the Huskies’ floor with her dependable routine, going 9.825. But Washington will unfortunately count an error routine after another shaky rotation. Maryland, on the other hand, was anything but shaky over on beam. The Terps improved on their opening score on this event, showcasing unique skills and strengths.

Rotation 4: Washington BB, Maryland FX

Ruffing (UMD): Opens with a clean double tuck, lunges in place, all the way around in her leaps, Ro 1.5 very overrotated, goes for the branny, somehow doesn’t hit her head AND does the stag jump out of it? That’s commitment. 9.350

Oppegard (UW): BHS LOSO, low and shaky-steps but stays on. Check on switch half and her turn, she recoups on the side aerial and doesn’t give anything away. Gainer full, sends it down but sticks. 9.550

DeFrees (UMD): Double tuck to open stumbles back and falls OOB. Front lay front full punch tuck is super clean. Precise leaps to finish. Unfortunate fall for an otherwise great routine. 9.250

Lin (UW): BHS LOSO is solid, wobbles after her leap connection. RO 1.5 stuck, 9.725

Kogler (UMD): High double tuck with pointed toes, drills the lunge, pretty leaps, RO 1.5 front layout, goes slightly sideways. 9.725

Navarro (UW): BHS BHS LOSO, some form but lands well. RO 1.5 dismount, a hop back but saves it from more. 9.825

Komoroski (UMD): FHS 1.5, ring position in both leaps is nice, RO 1.5, branny split jump. 9.875

Tubbs (UW): Front aerial, wobbles, goes again, front aerial BHS LOSO, clean. Very controlled dance, gainer pike dismount and absolutely nails the landing. 9.800

Rech (UMD): Front double full, gets it around, double tuck, large lunge out. RO 1.5 front layout, done well. 9.850

Moody (UW): BHS LOSO LOSO, it looks like she muscled the second LOSO there, falls. RO 1.5 fights for the stick and gets it. 8.925

Reade (UMD): Unique RO to double lay, bounces up out of it. Front layout, front full, underrotates and falls back. Another fall to count for Maryland. 9.250

Hallinan (UW): Missed her series. Leaps are good and dance is confident. Front aerial beat jump, no movement. RO 1.5 and sticks the landing. 9.875

Ex- Engelmayer (UMD): FHS double full, clean twist position. Leap combo is slightly wonky. RO 1.5 to front lay also clean.

Ex- Rak (UW): Impressive Leg-up full turn, side aerial BHS series is solid, RO double full, leg form and a hop hop to the side.

Ex- Ritchey (UMD): Front double full, still twisting on the landing. FHS Rudi LOSO muscles the LOSO.

FINAL: Maryland 194.625, Washington 193.575

VT: Katrina Mendez-Abolnik (UMD) – 9.850

UB: Deiah Moody (UW) – 9.850

BB: Emily DeFrees (UMD), Chelsea Halllinan (UW) – 9.875

FX: Maddie Komoroski (UMD) – 9.875

AA: Aine Reade (UMD) – 38.550

Not a super strong showing for either team, as both counted falls and had major mistakes. Both will look to improve on their performance next week.
