LIVE BLOG: No. 6 Auburn at No. 10 Arkansas

This meet features two top-10 SEC rivals, both of whom opened the season with the second-highest scores in their respective program histories. The Tigers posted a 197.150, powered by vault and floor performances that currently rank first nationally on both events. On vault, Paige Zancan delivered a near-perfect, career-high 9.975 with her distinctive front handspring front pike, followed by Sophia Bell’s 9.925 on Auburn’s first-ever Yurchenko double. Julianne Huff captured the all-around title in her collegiate debut, signaling a full return to form after foot surgery late last season, while Olivia Greaves also competed all four events and notched a career-high 9.950 on floor.

The Gymbacks opened their season with a 196.700 on the road at Minnesota, a solid away total highlighted by three all-around debuts from freshman Allison Cucci, Hailey Klein, and Fisk transfer Morgan Price—the first time in program history that three Gymbacks have competed all-around in the same meet. Cucci led the way, winning the all-around with a 39.350 that included a 9.900 on vault. Joscelyn Roberson was another standout, anchoring beam with a 9.950 to match her career high, though she did not compete all-around after sitting out vault.

The meet will be streamed on the SEC Network with live scores on Virtius.

Irvine (AUB): Piked Jaeger to overshoot nice height. Full-in to a stuck landing. Auburn really needed that! 9.900.

AFTER ONE: Arkansas (49.375), Auburn (48.750).

Wow! A very interesting start to this meet. The Gymbacks did their job dialing in on their vault landings, highlighted by Lauren Williams with her almost perfect career high. Auburn can’t be happy with their first rotation, having to count two scores in the 9.600s as they had several routines that lacked height on handstands and large steps on landings.

Rotation 2: Auburn VT, Arkansas UB

Greaves (AUB): Y Full with a good block but landed slightly off to the side.

Roberson (ARK): Great first handstand. Clear hip to Maloney. Pak is a little short but double layout is stuck. 9.775.

Leverton (AUB): Y 1.5, block is almost off of the table and has a step to the side. 9.825.

Klein (ARK): Ray to overshoot with solid form. Double layout with a small step. 9.825.

Neal (AUB): Y 1.5 with lots of power. Couldn’t spot the landing and has to take a large step foward.

Huff (AUB): Y 1.5. Couldn’t open her hips and arms fast enough. Another large step foward. 9.700

Campbell (ARK): Making her collegiate debut! High Tkatchev and amazing handstands! Double layout is awesome to a stick. 9.800.

Bell (AUB): Y double. Pretty close to a stick, a scoot back. So hard to do this vault but Auburn should be happy with that vault. 9.900.

Cucci (ARK): High Pak has almost a second before catching. Floaty double layout, opens her hips to find the landing. 9.900.

Zancan (AUB): FHS Front pike good block off and has to take a small hop foward. 9.825

M. Price (ARK): Maloney, Overshoot. Really holds that handstand on top of the bar. Full-in with a tiny step back. 9.850.

AFTER TWO: Arkansas (98.625), Auburn (97.775)

Half way through the meet, Arkansas is on fire. Auburn is definitely not having the meet that they hoped for so far. Head coach Jeff Graba just said that he wasn’t happy with his team’s energy. They certainly need to clean up their landings as they’re losing plenty of tenths. The highlights of this rotation were Cucci’s 9.900 and Sophia Bell’s Y Double also with a 9.900.

Rotation 3: Arkansas BB, Auburn FX

Gustitus (ARK): BHS LOSO. Rock solid. Pretty Switch leap to switch half. Unique switch leap to Gainer pike of the end and ends with a stuck landing. 9.850.

Ahern (AUB): FHS Rudi layout stepout, punches a bit sideways. Roundoff back 1.5 punch layout full, a little underrotated but covers it well. 9.800

Weaver (ARK): BHS LOSO has to step back resulting in a fall. aerial is solid. Roundoff back 1.5 STUCK. 9.275.

Huff (AUB): FTDT has a lot of height, really rises off the floor. Her leaps are awesome as well. Front full to front tuck is high and controlled. 9.875.

M. Price (ARK): Nice full-turn. BHS LOSO is right on with no wobbles. Cat leap to Front aerial rises off the beam. RO to double full and a STUCK landing! Arkansas needed this routine after a fall from Weaver. 9.925.

Bell (AUB): Front double full to front tuck and sticks it. Has lots of power and strength. Double pike is so high and drops it like a dart into the ground. 9.925.

AFTER THREE: Arkansas (148.025), Auburn (146.975)

Arkansas is building on its lead with a 49.400 score on beam. They avoided a scare with Weaver’s fall, but both Price and Roberson came through with 9.900+ scores to finish out the rotation and drop that low score. Auburn improved by putting up its best rotation score on the floor but still have over a point to make up as it ends with beam.

Klein (ARK): Front through to double tuck with a big lunge. Clean leap combination. Front layout front full, flairs her landing. 9.850.

Irvine (AUB): Front toss to BHS stepout is solid. Swtich leap to one handed Gainer laout stepout. Hit the moon walk. Tucked Gainer full of the end with a stick. 9.900.

M. Price (ARK): High Double Pike to start. Front layout to front full with a floaty landing. RO 2.5 twist and lands kind of close to the out of bounds area. 9.800.

Hagle (AUB): Front aerial to BHS. Had to repeat the series. Split jump to stag with a wobble, kind of close to touching her hands down. Piked Gainer to a stick. 9.675.

Smith (ARK): Front layout stepout to a double tuck is very close to stepping out. Good leap combination. Double pike to close and seems like she’d stick but hopped foward. 9.725

F. Price (ARK): First routine back from an Achilles injury. Love the Snoop Dogg chant to the crowd. Double layout to open and nails the landing. So much height on her leaps and jumps. Front full to front layout and spots her sister once she lands. Runs to her sister Morgan after the routine! So great to see her back on floor! 9.875.

Neal (AUB): BHS LOSO LOSO clean form and landing. RO back 1.5 with a small hop to end. Good to see her end her all-around debut on a high note! 9.850.

Roberson (ARK): Double layout has so much power and spots the landing so well. Switch side popa and rises so high on the combination. Front layout through to double tuck to end, a little stumble step back. 9.850.

FINAL: Arkansas (197.250), Auburn (196.075)

A temendous home opener for Arkansas who led every step of the way and won all four rotations. The Price sisters will be quite the duo going forward. Auburn had trouble with its landings throughout the meet and more wobbles than what it would have liked. The Tigers will need to improve on these when they host the No. 1 Gators next week.

VT: Williams (9.975)

UB: Cucci, Irvine (9.900)

BB: Roberson (9.950)

FX: Bell (9.925)

AA: M. Price (39.475)

  1. Question why Neal and Huff both posted 9.85 on bars but switched to 9.8 after following gymnast performs without explanation. Announcer stated Huff’s score was 9.85 “after review” -was there a second review?
