LIVE BLOG: Georgia, LIU, No. 5 Missouri at No. 11 Denver

Denver and Missouri are the two teams entering this meet with week-one experience. Missouri’s strong 196.700 season-opening score placed them No. 5 nationally and should provide a confidence boost heading into this week. Denver, on the other hand, will look to bounce back from a 195.700 performance, their lowest season opener in nearly nine years, marred by three beam falls.

Georgia enters with something to prove. How much impact has new head coach Cécile Canqueteau-Landi already had on the GymDogs? While Georgia showed early season jitters at last week’s preseason intrasquad, they also demonstrated significant improvement, particularly in bars and beam. Lily Smith, the GymDogs’ MVP, only competed on beam and floor at the preseason event. Will we see her take on the all-around in this meet?

For LIU, this meet serves as an important wellness check after significant roster turnover. The Sharks will lean heavily on newcomers to fill in key lineups.

Rotation 1: Denver Vault, Missouri Bars, Georgia Beam, LIU Floor

Brusch – Denver: Stream missed this! But it was a FTY for a 9.850

Howard – Georgia: Off on BHS LOSO, switch half to beat jump, connects it, BHS to stuck gainer full off the side. Not the start Georiga wanted. 9.275

Eaker – Georgia: Exhibition, it’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for, full turn, solid, aerial to LOSO, gets it! Switch leap to split leap, good rhythm, cartwheel to gainer full off the side, doesn’t get a ton of amplitude but lands it fine. That should be in the lineup next week. 9.650

Barrington from LIU finishes with a 1.5 to front layout on floor. LIU decides to just go with 5 scores on floor.

After 1: Denver 49.250, Missouri 49.125, Georgia 48.325, LIU 46.750

Looks like the vault judges forgot any other score besides 9.850 exists. Oops! But the Pioneers got off a great start on vault with 3 nearly stuck one-and-a-halfs. Missouri also had a good start on bars highlighted by Titarsolej’s 9.9. On the other hand, Georgia and LIU are starting the meet off on the struggle bus.

Rotation 2: LIU Vault, Denver Bars, Missouri Beam, Georgia Floor

Casali – Denver: Maloney to bail, good, nearly stuck DLO to finish. Great work.

King for Georgia on floor almost sat her 1.5 to front layout.

Claiborine – LIU: YFull, not too much amplitude and some piking down.

Backsay – Goergia: 2.5 to front tuck, big lunge forwards, back double-full is nice, double pike to finish with a lunge back. 9.850 is a tad high.

Ulrich sticks double-layout dismount on bars. 9.875

Acquino – Georgia: Front tuck to double tuck, good amplitude, this floor routine has shades of Soraya Hawthorne’s playfulness, wrenches around wolf jump full, finishes with the hugest double pike done by anyone ever. She’s going to be a star for them. 9.600 with a 9.5/9.7 split

Mundell anchors Denver with a 9.900

Lawrence – Missouri: Good positions on the split leap, side aerial to BHS with a lean, solid front aerial, step on 1.5 dismount.

Nice exhibition beam from Olivia Kelly.

After 2: Denver 98.450, Missouri 97.700, Georgia 97.325, LIU 94.400

Denver extends its lead over the others after a solid bars rotation. Beam got Missouri and will force the Tigers to absorb Conede’s 9.500. Georgia recovered on floor with a 49.000. LIU will stay behind the pack, held back by vaults that just don’t have the dynamics or difficulty to be competitive.

Rotation 3: Georgia Vault, LIU Bars, Denver Beam, Missouri Floor

Iwai – Denver: Missed this routine but it was a hit. Good recovery from last week. 9.900

Howard gets a 9.825 to open Georgia on vault.

Jackson – Missouri: Controlled double pick to open, floaty through the 1.5 to layout, missed the last pass.

Smith – Georgia: 1.5, cleaner than Bacskay’s, slightly off direction and a small shuffle to the side.

Mundel – Denver: Floaty BHS LOSO, beat jump to switch half to split jump, short on split position. 9.825

Acquino – Georgia: Stuck Tsuk-full and fully flares it out! The best one being done in the NCAA? 9.875

Tisler finishes with a 1.5 to layout for Missouri for a hit routine.

Stuck 1.5 for Addie Wahl on vault. 9.925

Ulrich – Denver: BHS LOSO with some knees, switch kick to switch side, a bit short on positions, front aerial to beat, good rythem, gets too close to the beam on the gainer pike dismount and clips her foot and lands it to her knees. 9.350

Horton – Missouri: Big full-in to open, punch front to double-tuck to finish, lunge back. 9.900

Mabanta – Denver: BHS LOSO, leg-up bobble, split leap to switch half, lean, gainer full dismount with a hop. 9.750

Toniolo anchors LIU with a hit routine to finish – just form issues throughout.

Griffin dismounts with a controlled front-tuck to double-tuck. 9.925

Moore – Missouri: double layout with controlled lunge back, gets leap series around, front tuck to double tuck, scoot with the front foot. 9.925

Minard – Missouri: Exhibition routine, great control on layout to Rudi, step OOB on double pike, obsessed with her zombie slug choreography like can we please put her in the floor lineup every week?

After 3: Denver 147.575, Missouri 147.150, Georgia 146.625, LIU 142.100

Denver was able to bypass the beam demons that plagued them last week, coming away with just one fall this week. Georgia was really impressive on vault with two stuck vaults from Aquino and Wahl for a 49.300 ties its season-high vault score from the 2024 season. Missouri had a great time on floor, improving 0.250 from last week with Horton, Griffin, and Moore going over 9.9.

Rotation 4: Missouri Vault, Georgia Bars, LIU Beam, Denver Floor

Mueller – Missouri: Yfull, I think she stuck it? Small lean. 9.775

Howard – Georgia: Church to bail, clean, blind full to stuck dismount. Great start. 9.875

Brusch opens Denver with a hit opening routine. 9.850

Claiborne – LIU: Bobble on full-turn, BHS LOSO, tentative but gets it, switch kick to aerial, short on split positions, front full dismount. Looked nervy throughout this routine.

Wahl – Georgia: Maloney to Pak, good, short on handstand, good last cast, stuck DLO. 9.875

Mundel – Denver: Front layout to full, two small hops to an OOB, some ambitious dance elements, high double tuck to finish. 9.675

LIU looking a bit nervy on beam.

Iwai has a bounce back on her double tuck on floor. 9.800

Mabanta – Denver: Layout to Rudi, under control, great split positions in the dance series, miscalculates the timing for her last pass and crashes it. 8.775, will have to count Mundel’s 9.675

Cartwright – LIU: Good split positions in switch side, good LOSO series, chest a bit low on the aerial, double-full dismount with a hop back. 9.750

Ulrich – Denver: Open double tuck, bounces back, 1.5 to layout is controlled, bounce back on the double pike. Good power overall, just needs some more landing control. 9.775

Holmes – LIU: Check on the aerial, BHS LOSO, holds it, grasps the beam on the switch leap but saves it. 8.900

FINAL: Denver 196.575, Missouri 196.125, Georgia 195.975, LIU 188.075

Big improvement for Denver from week one’s performance. The Pioneers still showed some early-season jitters with mistakes on beam and floor, but was able to make up with a strong bars rotation. Missouri will want to forget about this meet’s beam rotation, but showed solid performances on the other events. Georgia’s highly anticipated debut started rough on beam, but the Gymdogs got the ball rolling on the other events, outscoring Missouri and Denver on vault and bars.
