LIVE BLOG: Gainesville Regional Round Two Session One

No. 5 Utah, No. 12 Michigan State, No. 21 Towson, and No. 26 Maryland will battle it out for two spots in the regional final on Sunday. This session features three conference champions in Utah, Michigan, State, and Towson, and all four teams are capable of a mid 197+ so it is anyone’s meet. Towson is starting on beam which has troubled the Tigers this season, so if Towson is going to contend, it will have to put up a great beam number. Utah has never missed advancing to nationals so Utah will be favored to advance out of this session, along with Michigan State but anything can happen.

This session will also provide benchmark scores to watch for session two in regards to individual qualifiers to nationals. The bars field at these regionals is deep, with two of the top contenders in the session. Isabella Minervini is tied for fourth in the country on the event and with a normal routine, would be a favorite to advance. Lali Dekanoidze of North Carolina who will be rotating with Michigan State will also be a contender with a stuck landing after missing out on a spot last year due to Michigan missing nationals. The floor competition will also be fierce, but Brown’s Julia Bedell will get to compete after the Michigan State floor lineup so watch out for her routine.

Michigan State was landing some huge vaults and that rotation and only lost some of that lead due to a stellar bars rotation. Maryland was able to drop the fall, but will still be quite a bit back.
