Sacramento State announced today that former coach and legend of the Hornets program Randy Solorio has passed away at the age of 63 after a battle with cancer.
Solorio had been a part of Sacramento State in one way or another since 1986. His coaching career began as an assistant coach, where the Hornets won seven conference titles and made its first appearance as a team in an NCAA regional during that time. He became head coach of the Hornets in 2016, where his team won the MPSF championship for the first time under his guidance. He served on the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Committee in 2018 and retired from coaching after the 2023 season.
Solorio earned multiple awards during his career, including the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year in 1997 and MPSF Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015.
Before becoming a coach, Solorio was a gymnast at UC Davis from 1980 to 1982. He earned All-America honors on vault, high bar, and floor exercise.
