LIVE BLOG: Best of Utah With No. 4 Utah, No. 31 Southern Utah, No. 40 BYU, and No. 42 Utah State

Get ready for a classic state school clash between the Utahs. While the Utes are probably going to run away with the title, there is still a lot for them to prove from their first meets of the season. After a rather lackluster start to the season, the Utes were able to improve marginally over their week one performance. Since this will be a double-meet weekend for the Utes, it will be interesting to see if Carly Dockendorf experiments with some of the lineup decisions. The battle for second will be fierce between Southern Utah, BYU, and Utah State. All three teams are in similar mid-194 scoring territory so far in 2025, but Southern Utah has been the only one able to crack into the 195s.

Looks like McCallum, Smith, and Winger will be in the AA tonight. The Utes have enough depth to make up for Neff’s season-ending injury,

Rotation 1: Southern Utah Vault, Utah Bars, BYU Beam, Utah State Floor

Eagles – Floor: Front LO + Rudi, double tuck to finish chest down on landing with a big lunge forward- looked like her BHS was a little high

Dudley – BYU: BHS LOSO, solid, cat leap to aerial, small waver, 1.5 dismount with a big step forward. 9.750

After 1: Southern Utah 49.100, Utah 49.525, BYU 49.025, Utah State 48.950

Utah State had some issues on floor, but besides that everyone else had a solid opening rotation. BYU’s 49.025 is a massive improvement from last week’s 48.025. Utah’s 49.525 on bars, is a high for them this season. A 49.100 is also a high for Southern Utah on vault.

The judges evaluation panel is going to have a fun time doing this meet!

Matern – Floor: Front double-full, crossed feet, 1.5 to front layout, floaty, switch ring to wolf leap, Rudi with hop to the side.

Morabito – Vault: Yfull, very tidy in the air, hop back

Goodman – Bars: Big piked Jaeger, some feet, Pak, good, shy of handstand on the pirouette, blind full to double tuck, stuck.

Silva – Floor: Rudi, double tuck with too much power and two hops, a bit shy of position on the wolf full, 1.5 to full to finish.

The stream didn’t show us Amelie Morgan’s 9.925 beam I need to speak with the manager!!!

McCallum – Beam: Triple wolf turn, double wolf turn, solid, BHS LOSO, lean, switch leap to split leap, stuck full-twisting gainer to finish.

After 2: Southern Utah 98.150, Utah 99.050, BYU 97.700, Utah State 98.000

Brooks – Bars: Ray to overshoot, nice, double layout with a step.

McCallum – Floor: Full-in to open, controlled lunge, front tuck to double back, hop to lunge, double wolf turn.

Miller – Beam: Hangs on to the BHS LOSO, looked really off but does a great job to save it and not wobble too much, double-full dismount, crossed feet and a hop. 9.850.

Krump – Floor: Rudi with a hop to lunge, good leaps, front layout to full to front pike. Whip half and miscalculates the punch and does a front tuck out, think that was supposed to be a layout. Still goes 9.850 okay!

After 3: Southern Utah 146.800, Utah 148.575, BYU 146.500, Utah State 146.950

Utah still on 198 pace with a 49.525 on floor thanks to three 9.925s and some wild judging. Utah State has a good bar rotation to sneak ahead of Southern Utah.

Rotation 4: Utah Vault, BYU Bars, Utah State Beam, Southern Utah Floor

Zirbes – Vault: 1.5 – some knees at the end, small hop. 9.875

“The judges are definitely working hard to judge based on the Code of Points this season” is NCAA gymnastics in a nutshell

Jorgensen – bars: Ray, huge amplitude, arch on the bail but pulls it back, DLO dismount.

Jelen – Beam: Aerial to BHS, solid, split jump to stag ring jump – doesn’t totally get that position, tiny step on the gainer full dismount. 9.875

Alvarado – Bars: toe-on, arch, Maloney, to bail, double layout with a hop in place. 9.850

Eagles – beam: BHS LOSO, holds on to it, aerial to split jump, check, switch leap to split jump, check again. 1.5 stuck.

Fernandez – Floor: Double tuck to a hop to a lunge in place, just gets the wolf jump full around, back 1.5 to layout, nice. Rudi to finish, hop to the side.

Smith – Vault: Stuck Omelianchik, beautiful. Immediately goes to Mailie to high five and Mailie has to scream SALUTE. 9.950

Christensen – Floor: Back 1.5 to full, solid, double tuck to lunge to finish. 9.875

Glynn – Vault: 1.5 to step back, off direction on landing, clean in the air. 9.850

Morgan needs a 9.9+ to get Utah to a 198

Eaquinto – Bars: Missed this routine but tiny shuffle back on the double layout. 9.875

Randolph – Floor: Double layout to open, step forwards, switch side to straddle jump x2, front tuck to round off double-back, so powerful! Step to the side. 9.825 with at least a 0.15 on the first pass.

Brooks – Beam: Front aerial to one arm BHS, wavers through both of those skills but kinda connects it, switch leap to Korbut to backward roll, great flow, lean on the full turn, BHS to gainer full, doesn’t rise too much but gets the stick. 9.825.

Glazier – Bars: Jaeger, bail, good handstands, double layout with some straddling, sticks the landing. 9.825

Cacciola – Floor: Whip to double-tuck bounce back, switch ring to switch half to wolf full, fine, Rudi to bounce in place.

We didn’t see Morgan again!!! But she got a 9.850 on vault.

  1. Disclosure: I am a huge Utah Fan, I was also at the meet in the fourth row. First, I want to point out an inaccuracy in your preamble. Up until yesterday, we all thought that Avery’s injury was season-ending. But we have received more information, Utah is stating that her return status is unknown, and other sources have stated that she is working towards a return for the postseason. Now to the shenanigans: You eluded to to some scoring issues, OMG, I’m a total “homer,” but my mouth was often agape when they posted the scores. It was almost like watching an Oklahoma meet. One thing that was good is that the inflated scoring was consistent for all four teams. You mentioned that the SCOREBoard judging panel is going to have fun with this meet, I don’t think so, I think that will view it and ask themselves, “Did this meet with the ABC/ESPN mandate?” and then nod and signoff. I was Pollyanna enough to believe that scoring was going to change, but I am realizing that the so called improvements and the early weeks lower scores were simply to get us all to shut up.

  2. Interesting take that Daniel has taken. I don’t see any other Live Blog posted where your staff has made such comments about the judging. I never see when Oklahoma, LSU or Florida teams have a Live Blog and any of your staff comment on their over scoring. Seems to be a bias even among your website so how can we expect the judges to not have a bias. Very disappointed.
