That’s where we come in. Last Week in College Gym is your one-stop shop for all the important headlines from the previous week in college gymnastics. No matter if you’re taking a social media break, went on vacation, or just don’t have the capacity to follow every single gymnast, team, and fan, we have you covered.

Top Storylines

NCAA to Consider Landmark Scholarship Changes

Following a meeting of college athletics power conferences’ leadership, Yahoo reported that the manner in which scholarships can be allotted amongst teams will change. As a result of the recent settlement of several antitrust lawsuits against the NCAA and the resulting revenue-sharing model, schools will now be able to count as much as $2.5 million of additional scholarships toward their annual revenue sharing cap, which is expected to begin at or around $21.5 million. The likely result will be additional scholarship money being awarded to athletes, with caps on roster sizes implemented as a result (for example, football rosters will be capped to 105 players). 

Olympic Corner

  • Aleah Finnegan, Emma Malabuyo, and Levi Jung-Ruivivar appeared on the Blind Landing podcast to discuss their paths to competing for the Philippines at the Olympics.
  • Luisa Blanco and Lynnzee Brown posed with Finnegan, Malabuyo, and Jung-Ruivivar at the Olympic Village in a fun display of NCAA representation on the elite stage.
  • Brown served as Haiti’s flag bearer in the Opening Ceremony. She is the first female gymnast to represent Haiti at an Olympic Games.

Other Newsworthy Items

  • Bowling Green head coach Kerrie Turner left her position to become the school’s assistant athletic director of student-athlete services. Turner previously served as the president of the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA). Per the school’s release, the search to replace Turner will begin immediately.
  • A profile of UCLA gymnast and U.S. Olympian Jordan Chiles was the cover feature for Teen Vogue’s July/August issue.
  • Former George Washington gymnast and associate head coach Stephanie Stoicovy Worrell will take over as head coach following the retirement of Margie Foster Cunningham.  
  • Former Iowa assistant Rachel David will join Washington’s staff as an assistant coach.
  • Gibran Campos, a former club coach at SCEGA in California, also joined Washington’s staff.
  • Former Arkansas gymnast Kiara Gianfagna joined the Razorbacks’ staff as a student assistant coach.
  • Former UCLA assistant coach Kyle Grable joined the Iowa staff in the same role.

Transfer News

  • Former Washington standout Skylar Killough-Wilhelm transferred to Kentucky for her final year of eligibility. 
  • Talladega junior Sidnei Heubach transferred to Western Michigan for her final year of eligibility.

  • Illinois freshman Mya Gordon is training a Bhardwaj on bars.
  • Auburn fifth-year Gabby McLaughlin is training a one-handed back handspring to two layout stepouts  on beam. 
  • North Carolina State sophomore Maddie Hall is training a front aerial to scale on beam.
  • Iowa senior Ilka Juk is training an Onodi to one foot on beam.
  • Michigan freshman Sophia Diaz is training a Yurchenko double full vault into the pit.
  • Nebraska fifth-year Sophia McClelland is training an aerial to one foot on beam.
  • Michigan sophomore Haylen Zabrowski is training a double layout full out bars dismount.
  • Michigan sophomore Ava Jordan is training a Yurchenko one and a half vault into the pit.
  • Ohio State freshman Karleigh Reutzel is training a tour jete half to Popa to Popa combination on beam.
  • Ohio State sophomore Maisyn Rader is training a back handspring to side gainer full dismount combination on beam. 
  • Georgia sophomore Ady Wahl is training several upgrades, including a triple series and a side somi on beam, as well as a piked full-in into the pit on floor.
  • Oklahoma senior Danielle Sievers is training beam. A standout on vault, bars, and floor, Sievers has only competed beam in the exhibition spot.
  • Georgia freshman Brooke Gleichowski is training a double layout dismount on bars.
