If anyone missed La Crosse’s huge score on the road last weekend, the team repeated the feat in its victory over NCGA No. 1 Oshkosh with a 192-plus for the second week in a row. Brockport’s stacked floor lineup continues to inch closer to that 49.000 mark, and Ursinus notched a season high AND the best team floor score since 2018.
Superlatives
Seeing Red
From the shoes to the necklace, Cortland head coach Sulekha Modi Zaug and assistant coach Nicole Jackson were a pair that had you seeing red. More meet day outfits, please!
Debut of the Week
In Cate Sandvik’s senior year, she has upgraded her vault to a full-twisting tucked Yurchenko, giving herself a crack at not only the vault lineup but the all-around as well. This weekend was her debut all-around performance where she posted a 38.050.
Routines We Don’t Talk About Enough
While this is a non-exclusive list, we wanted to highlight some routines that really stood out this weekend that typically don’t get a lot of air time. UW-Stout’s Gillian Cummins has the only full-twisting Yurchenko in the Blue Devils’ lineup, and it’s a great one with flare at the end. Laurel Raymond from Hamline has some serious potential on beam. Her skill selection and style are lovely to watch. We can’t talk about style without mentioning Winona State’s Taryn Sellner. While her leap and jump connections tend to be more unique than most, she’s sharp and never fails to hit full positions. Brockport’s Kyra Figurelli and her stunning full-in on floor makes a splash week after week, as well as Cortland’s Abby Bang and her front handspring front tuck that brushes the sky.
Release of the Week
Don’t sleep on Hamline. Julia Cheely’s Jaeger is floaty with the perfect amount of turnover. It’s highly underrated in our opinion. Honorable mention goes to the entire La Crosse lineup, which was on absolute fire with its release catches this week. Rachel Chesley’s in-the-clouds Tkatchev was the most notable.
NCGA-East Meet of the Week
Ithaca at Springfield
Why Should You (Re)Watch? This meet is a double dual! Featuring both Springfield men’s and women’s gymnastics teams, the men’s team faced off against William & Mary while the women’s took on the Bombers. Gymnastics, on gymnastics, on gymnastics.
Are These Teams Trending Up or Down? Springfield needs to put some work in on bars, but the Pride already improved from last week and remain trending up on the other events. Ithaca finds itself in the same position on bars, and continues to push the envelope on beam. You can expect the Bombers to trend up, too.
WIAC Meet of the Week
Hamline and Winona State at UW-Stout
Why Should You (Re)Watch? There was so much solid gymnastics across all three teams. Julia Cheely stepped it up on bars for Hamline. Taryn Sellner showed off a unique switch half with a quarter, and is there to stay in Winona State’s beam lineup. Stout’s standouts of Isabela Krulich, Kiara Brown and Effie Ferguson continued to shine as usual. Another perk was a split screen that allowed viewers to see more routines.
Are These Teams Trending Up or Down? Hamline posted its second-highest team total of the season, stepping it up big time on bars. As the team continues to work on the details, things should be looking up from here. Winona State showed some really strong skills but didn’t quite put a whole meet together this week. It’s a bit too soon to tell for the Warriors. Stout is generally on the upswing but will need to continue to work on avoiding counting mistakes to contend with the top teams in the NCGA come postseason.
