LIVE BLOG: Ivy Classic

Penn is the defending Ivy League champion, beating Yale by 1.050 in the closing weeks of the 2020 season, and a repeat of that finish is very likely today. While the Quakers are only ranked six spots above conference No. 2 Yale, their NQS is almost a point and a half higher. It would take at least one counted fall for Penn to fail to defend today, likely multiple of them.

Yale is the favorite for the No. 2 finish by almost as much, though Brown has the upside to have a chance on its best day. Brown and Cornell have progressed through the rankings hand-in-hand through the season, but Brown has a much better season high (and correspondingly, much more variance) whereas Cornell has scored a 191 at five of its six meets so far and will hope that consistency pays off.

Rotation 1: Brown VT, Yale UB, Cornell BB, Penn FX

Lund (Cornell): Beat to switch side good, falls on her kickover front. One and a half twist stuck-ish, hop back to salute. 8.825

Aviad (Yale): Caught blind full double back, hop forward. 9.725

Kramer (Brown): Yurchenko layout, solid with a big hop back. 9.5

Xing (Brown): FTY, slightly closed hips throughout, hop in place. Great. 9.725

Song (Penn): Double back, minor scoot back. Looks like that was her last pass. 9.75

Wilson (Yale): Shy first handstand, Ray to overshoot good. Blind full, leg flutter, double back very underrotated with a big step forward. 9.675

Poley (Brown): FTY, a little more pike and some sideways movement but well rotated with a couple steps back. 9.675

Kraez (Penn): Good double pike, touch overrotated. Front lay front full undercooked and sits. Switch half Popa good, double tuck also under with two big steps forward.

Gardner (Brown): FTY, once again touch of pike but just a tiny hop back. Brown has really increased the difficulty in this vault lineup. 9.725

Chia (Yale): Pretty Jaeger, good bail, half to half to Rudi landed a little awkwardly but salutes fast and moves on.

Bedell (Brown): Big FTY, very clean, step back. 9.75

Phair (Cornell): BHS back tuck, awkward throughout and it’s no surprise when she falls. Kickover front to beat, off line but works through it, beat to tuck full jump, full turn. Cat leap switch side, gainer full stuck.

Toy (Yale): Missed a handstand substantially, good bail, has to try her toe circle on the low bar twice. Sounds like she fell on her Jaeger early on, big hop on dismount. 8.85

DeMeo (Cornell): Full turn, major check. Front aerial, adjust, BHS, just barely makes it. Switch to split 3/4. Beat kickover front split, check, punch front full stuck.

Van Horn (Penn): Front full front pike, that was a last pass.

M. Garrett (Penn): Double pike, good, double tuck very low but stands it up. Split full Popa Popa, front full front lay with some leg separation 9.6

Walker (Yale): Blind to Jaeger, overshoot, looking great so far. Double lay with a hop back. Super precise work. 9.875

Beers (Cornell): Cat leap kickover front to beat, BHS LOSO strong. Switch, check, split to split half. Full turn, one and a half twist with a step forward. 9.6

S. Kenefick (Penn): Joining her partway, front double full looks good today. 9.825

After 1: Brown 48.675, Yale 48.625, Penn 47.825, Cornell 47.375

Floor has been a more challenging event for Penn all year and a counted fall on that event isn’t the best news, but it’s surmountable. Great start from Brown, which has really been coming along on vault lately.

Rotation 2: Penn VT, Brown UB, Yale BB, Cornell FX

DeMeo (Cornell): Front double full. Ring jump to switch ring, questionable position on both. Rudi to split, OOB. 9.275

Wilson (Yale): Switch to split. BHS LOSO, looks a little straddled from the back angle, but makes it work. Side aerial tuck back full with some sideways travel and a hop. 9.7

Hsu (Penn): Solid FTY, hop back. 9.65…

Stone (Cornell): Double tuck, well controlled. Front lay front full chaotic but stands it up.

Richter (Brown): Blind to pike Jaeger very clean, bail. Making handstands well. Blind full double back with a step forward. 9.775

Song (Penn): Another solid full, pretty substantial hop back. She can do a 1.5 but we haven’t seen it yet this season. 9.725

Mangiacapre (Yale): Full turn, BHS LOSO well controlled, switch split split 3/4. Front aerial, falls. Gainer pike stuck-ish.

DeBarberie (Penn): Slightly less distance than the last couple fulls but a bigger hop back. 9.65

Michelini (Cornell): Rudi to double stag, substantial travel back, switch half split… something, didn’t make the position or the rotation. One and a half front lay, low and arched with a step back. 9.65

Walker (Yale): BHS LOSO, slightest lean. Full turn, front aerial to split, switch split beat. Side aerial back full stuck. 9.9

Brady (Cornell): Front through double back, cowboyed and pulling so hard to try to rotate it, runs back four or five steps and OOB. Switch side Popa Popa. Double pike underrotated, step forward.

Toy (Yale): BHS LOSO good, switch ring, full turn. Cautious but working through well. Split to sheep, step, side aerial back full.

Costa (Brown): Blind to Jaeger, great form, bail. Blind full double back with a step back. Beautiful routine, great handstands, great toe point.

Meeks (Yale): Side aerial, check, steady leaps, gainer pike stuck.

After 2: Yale 97.775, Brown 97.650, Penn 96.375, Cornell 95.100

Brown is on fire today: That’s a season high on bars by over half a point. A tightly-scored vault rotation meant that Penn fell even further behind, while Yale looked bulletproof on beam but has its tougher events coming up.

Rotation 3: Cornell VT, Penn UB, Brown BB, Yale FX

Liebhart (Brown): BHS LOSO, fall. Encouraging. Full turn, front aerial off line to beat. Switch split 3/4, gainer pike with a step forward. 9.0

Walton (Cornell): Slightly soft on the table but FTY solid with a step to the side. 9.575

Song (Penn): Good FTDB with a hop back. 9.725

S. Kenefick (Penn): Shy on a cast handstand, back double full with a big step forward. 9.625

Weiner (Brown): Cat leap switch side, cat leap side aerial with a check, full turn awkward. BHS gainer full, low with a step forward. 9.475

Wilson (Yale): We missed the first pass, sketchy switch ring half, double pike solid. 9.75

Kraez (Penn): Blind to Jaeger, little leg separation on the bail but aggressive handstand, blind full double back with a hop forward. 9.825

Sokolowsky. (Brown): Switch split, front aerial a little tentative, split 3/4. Arm swing on her full turn. Front full, totally lost in the air and lands on her side. Saw her miss that in warm ups too. 9.0

Webster (Cornell): Yurchenko Arabian underrotated, big step back and to one side. 9.65

Chia (Yale): Rudi to split good, tour jete half wolf 3/2 underrotated. One and a half front lay stuck-ish. 9.875

Penuela-Wermers (Penn): Joining partway for her stalder to double back. 8.475, apparently some stuff happened here that we didn’t see. We’re not getting a ton of full routines.

Contello (Brown): Cat leap front aerial, fall. Counting two now. Full turn, punch front full great.

Toy (Yale): Double back stuck, switch side Popa with a hop. Front lay front full goes a little sideways but controlled well. Rudi to split, chaotic in the air. 9.75

Xing (Brown): BHS back pike, super solid. Standing LOSO with a major check. Switch switch side, full turn, double twist dismount with a step back. 9.575

Kuhn (Penn): FTDB stuck. 9.9

Wang (Yale): Full in, chest down with a step to the side. Switch side Popa, slightly underrotated, good double back. One and a half front lay good. 9.825

M. Marr (Penn): Hop back on the double layout. 9.875

Schultze (Brown): Full turn, side aerial back full.

Cho (Yale): Sits her opening combo pass. OOB on her last. That’s our drop score.

After 3: Yale 146.425, Penn 145.325, Brown 144.500, Cornell 143.425

Huge margins here, almost a point between each team. This should be the final order unless someone collapses in the final rotation.

Rotation 4: Yale VT, Cornell UB, Penn BB, Brown FX

Wilson (Yale): Tucked FTY, big hop back.

(Brown): Front full front lay front tuck. Switch half wolf full Popa, wolf 3/2. Rudi, underrotated with long lunge.

Wang (Yale): She literally disappeared in midair due to a stream quirk which was pretty awesome.

DeBarberie (Penn): Split split half, full turn, side aerial. Got the dismount, stream is starting to give out on us. 9.8

Had some stream issues and some WordPress issues simultaneously but Yale is looking pretty 9.5y on vault while Penn is having a great vault rotation. I don’t know if this is possible for Penn still but it’s a good effort.

Weiner (Brown): Solid double back, switch side Popa. Wolf 3/2. One and a half front lay… ish, sketchy position there.

Walker (Yale): Yurchenko Arabian, solid, hop forward. 9.725

Yang (Penn): BHS BHS… straight off the side, no contact at all made on that layout. Split to ring. Went offscreen after that, I’m trying to watch in the background here.

Beers (Cornell): Tkachev, not much counter, bail. Whippy double layout very close to the bar but made. 9.525

Marr (Penn): Full turn, BHS LOSO with a lean. Hitch kick side aerial, bend check, something to switch side good, hop forward on gainer full dismount.

We’re pretty much done here, Brown has about two points on Cornell at this point. They’re just showing us replays instead of whatever Brown and Cornell are actually doing.

Xing (Brown): Oh, a routine! One pass anyway. Double pike underrotated. 9.525. Didn’t we learn a lot from this?

Walsh (Brown): Double pike, OOB. Nice clean rotation on her leaps, good combo pass, Rudi maybe a touch underrotated but landed well. 9.425

Bedell (Brown): Front through double back, great. Tour jete half split full a touch underrotated. Tour jete full… attempted, stepped around pretty substantially. I’m sure they could find her some better leaps. Double pike overrotated, three steps back and OOB.

FINAL: Yale 195.050, Penn 194.125, Brown 192.200, Cornell 191.625

That’s a season high by a point for Yale. Even at Penn’s best, which today certainly wasn’t, it would have been hard work to stay level. Brown started incredibly strong but lost a bit of momentum on floor,

VT: Lindsay Chia (Yale) 9.825
UB: Mei Li Costa (Brown), Kristen Kuhn (Penn) 9.900
BB: Raegan Walker (Yale) 9.900
FX: Lindsay Chia (Yale) 9.875
AA: Lindsay Chia (Yale) 39.150
