After much speculation, 5-star recruit Konnor McClain, a senior elite who currently trains at WOGA, announced her verbal commitment to LSU today. She is the Tigers’ first recruit in the class of 2023.
McClain had a rewarding career as a junior. She won the balance beam title at the U.S. championships in both 2018 and 2019, and was also second in the all around and on vault and bars in 2019. In 2020 she won gold on all four events, as well as silver in the all around, at International Gymnix in Canada.
When the Olympics were postponed, McClain became eligible to make the U.S. team, but a difficult start to her 2021 campaign prompted her to withdraw from the Olympic process, switch gyms from Revolution to WOGA and commit to a more relaxed training schedule that she hopes will lead her to Paris 2024. If she continues training elite with the Olympics in mind, it is probable that she will not begin competing for the Tigers until the 2025 season.
Thanks to her clean and elegant yet difficult gymnastics, McClain is expected to have a stellar college career. She has the potential to score multiple perfect 10.0s on all events and to compete flawless routines especially on bars and beam on a weekly basis.
Stay tuned for a more in-depth look at where McClain will contribute in her Recruit File, coming next week. Plus, to see a full view of LSU’s future classes, visit our Rosters and Commits Spreadsheet.
