The Mount: Week Two WAG

It’s week two, and nearly every team that didn’t already start its season is back in action for 2019. We’ll get our first looks at the likes of Florida and Washington, as well as see if the performances from UCLA, Oklahoma and Utah were flukes or the real deal. As always, you’ll find everything you need to follow along with all the meets happening this weekend, including previews of the top matchups, Fantasy Gymnastics resources and every scoring and video link you could ever need.

Can’t-Miss Matchups

No. 5 Georgia at No. 1 Oklahoma

When You Need to Tell Your Friends You’re Busy: Friday, January 11 at 8 p.m. ET

Why You Should Cancel Plans For It: It’s a top five matchup in Norman, with two championship-winning teams from different eras coming head to head. Georgia had a strong showing in its first week, and to say that Oklahoma did too would be an understatement as it’s coming off the first 198+ score of the season. In fact, the Sooners managed the total on the road, so expect even bigger numbers for the home opener.

Routines to Avoid Going to the Bathroom During: Maggie Nichols (OU, literally every event—she’s that good), Olivia Trautman (OU, FX), Rachael Lukacs (Georgia, VT), Sydney Snead (Georgia, FX), Sabrina Vega (Georgia, BB), Abbey Ward (Georgia, VT)

What Else You Should Know Before Tuning In: Georgia freshman Rachel Baumann seems to be on the mend from preseason injuries, having competed beam and vault (exhibition) in the season opener. Expect some contributions from her here. Teammate Megan Roberts is still out with injury, as is Sterlyn Austin.

Washington at No. 8 Nebraska

When You Need to Tell Your Friends You’re Busy: Saturday, January 12 at 1 p.m. ET

Why You Should Cancel Plans For It: The final spot at nationals may just come down to these two teams, and lucky us! We get an early look at them head-to-head. Sure, it’s unlikely that they will matchup at regionals and actually vie for that last spot against one another, but the Huskies and Huskers could both sit at or around No. 8 all season.

Routines to Avoid Going to the Bathroom During: Taylor Houchin (Neb, VT, UB), Adnerys DeJesus (Neb, FX), Sienna Crouse (Neb, VT, UB), Megan Schweihofer (Neb, UB, BB), Brenna Brooks (UW, VT, FX), Maya Washington (UW, UB, FX), Malory Rose (UW, BB), Amara Cunningham (UW, FX)

What Else You Should Know Before Tuning In: Catelyn Orel and Kynsee Roby (Nebraska) and Talia Brodevani (Washington) are out with injury. Washington was on a bye week one while Nebraska fell to then-No. 1 UCLA. At Pauley Pavillion, the Huskers went 23-for-24 but will be looking to clean up floor details moving forward.

Meets You Didn’t Know You Should Be Interested In

No. 3 Utah at BYU

When the Meet’s Happening: Friday, January 11 at 9 p.m. ET

Why You Should See the Error of Your Ways: BYU exceeded expectations in 2018, even nearly surpassing Boise State to win the MRGC. The Cougars retain a strong core of gymnasts and add a large and capable freshman class. Their floor choreography never disappoints with spunky and fun routines. Utah has always been a powerhouse, and this season is no different. The Utes came out strong in week one and will surely ride that progression into week two. Plus, Utah and BYU have a storied rivalry—who doesn’t love a good ol’ college showdown?

Routines to Look Up on YouTube Before the Meet That Prove Our Point: Shannon Evans (BYU, FX), Mykayla Skinner (Utah, VT, FX), Adrienne Randall (Utah, BB), Haley Pitou (BYU, UB), Sadie Miner (BYU, VT), Makenna Merrell-Giles (Utah, UB, FX), Natasha Marsh (BYU, BB)

No. 22 West Virginia, Eastern Michigan and Utah State at Pittsburgh

When the Meet’s Happening: Saturday, January 12 at 2 p.m. ET

Why You Should See the Error of Your Ways: All four teams are perennial regionals “bubble” teams, so this should be an exciting matchup of similarly ranked opponents. Any one of the four teams could come out on top. Pittsburgh is fresh off a successful 2018 campaign where it qualified for regionals for the first time since 2013. Eastern Michigan had a rough 2018 season, so it will be looking to get back into regionals contention. Utah State just missed out on regionals last season, so it will be looking for redemption this season. And West Virginia will be looking to build on its performance in Cancun last weekend where it was successful on vault, beam and floor but had to count two falls on bars.

Routines to Look Up on YouTube Before the Meet That Prove Our Point: Haley Brechwald (Pitt, FX), Lucy Brett (Pitt, UB), Alecia Petrikis (Pitt, FX), Brittany West (Pitt, BB), Olivia Miller (Pitt, BB, FX), Esperanza Abarca (WVU, UB), Kirah Koshinski (WVU, VT, FX), Maddie Straker (USU, FX), Madi Ward-Sessions (USU, FX), Autumn DeHarde (USU, BB), Emili Dobronics (EMU, FX), Shannon Gregory (EMU, FX)

No. 15 Ohio State at No. 25 N.C. State

When the Meet’s Happening: Saturday, January 12 at 6 p.m. ET

Why You Should See the Error of Your Ways: Both the Buckeyes and Wolfpack had strong showings their first week out, so don’t be deceived by the ranking gap. Ohio State, though a little more composed than N.C. State, was at Georgia where scores tend to run a bit higher than at MSU. This one could be anyone’s game, especially since N.C. State is at home. Need more convincing? Both teams have head coaches in their sophomore seasons just starting to show what an affect they’re having on their respective programs.

Routines to Look Up on YouTube Before the Meet That Prove Our Point: Claire Gagliardi (tOSU, FX), Jamie Stone (tOSU, BB), Olivia Aepli (tOSU, FX), Jenna Swartzentruber (tOSU, UB), Paris Phillips (NCSU, FX), Drew Grantham (NCSU, BB, FX), Caitlyn Fillard (NCSU, FX), Nicole Webb (NCSU, BB)

No. 7 Kentucky, Lindenwood and Oregon State at No. 29 Illinois

When the Meet’s Happening: Sunday, January 13 at 3 p.m. ET

Why You Should See the Error of Your Ways: You could look at this and might see a lot of nothing, but you should look at it and see an up-and-coming SEC squad with a stellar floor rotation, one of the very best DII teams that holds up against its DI counterparts, a Pac-12 mainstay looking for redemption after missing nationals in 2018 and a Big Ten team hungry for a comeback after a disappointing first outing. There are a lot of bragging rights at stake here.

Routines to Look Up on YouTube Before the Meet That Prove Our Point: Alex Hyland (UK, BB, FX), Aubree Rosa (UK, FX), Mollie Korth (UK, VT, UB), Rae Balthazor (Ill, UB), Mary Jane Otto (Ill, UB), Karen Howell (Ill, UB, FX), Shaylah Scott (Ill, FX), Madi Dagen (OSU, BB), Savanna Force (OSU, FX), Kaitlyn Yanish (OSU, FX), Isis Lowery (OSU, FX), Andy Alexander (LU, BB, FX), Nicole Baars (LU, VT, FX), Breanna Franklin (LU, BB, FX), Ryan Henry (LU, UB, BB), Emily Milliet (LU, BB)

Meets You Should at Least Record and Watch Later

No. 11 Missouri at Florida

When to Find It on the TV Guide: Friday, January 11 at 7 p.m. ET

Why You Should Clear Space on Your DVR: Missouri had a great meet to start its season, and it was good enough to land just outside the top 10 in the country for the week. The Tigers will need to do that and much more if they want any chance at catching Florida, who will expect to open their season with a bang thanks to a stellar freshman class. Expect strong debuts from almost every member of that group tonight.

Routines to Check Out If You Can’t Rewatch Everything: Alyssa Baumann (Florida, BB), Alicia Boren (Florida, FX), Madeleine Huber (Missouri, UB), Hannah McCrary (Missouri, FX), Trinity Thomas (Florida, FX), Aspen Tucker (Missouri, FX)

No. 6 Michigan, Bowling Green and Denver at No. 18 Alabama

When to Find It on the TV Guide: Friday, January 11 at 7:30 p.m. ET

Why You Should Clear Space on Your DVR: Denver and Bowling Green open their seasons while Alabama and Michigan come off of weeks with mixed results on both sides. The latter two teams have been on similar levels for the past few years now, so it will be an exciting matchup. Don’t slouch on Denver, either, as it has been ranked in the top 15 for two straight years, and this season should be no different.

Routines to Check Out If You Can’t Rewatch Everything: Abby Brenner (Michigan, VT), Jovannah East (Bowling Green, FX), Emily Gaskins (Alabama, FX), Tess Muir (Bowling Green, BB), Shallon Olsen (Alabama, VT), Lynnzee Brown (Denver, FX), Kaitlyn Schou (Denver, BB), Alexis Vasquez (Denver, BB) Natalie Wojcik (Michigan, FX)

No. 4 LSU at No. 17 Auburn

When to Find It on the TV Guide: Friday, January 11 at 8:30 p.m. ET

Why You Should Clear Space on Your DVR: Both of these teams have something to prove after last week with LSU having counted a fall on vault and Auburn counting lower-than-average scores on every event for a team score that didn’t crack 195. Auburn has been seeking to rise into the top tier of the SEC since it made Super Six in 2015, and this matchup will be a key test to see if this squad will rise to the occasion.

Routines to Check Out If You Can’t Rewatch Everything: Kennedi Edney (LSU, VT), Ruby Harrold (LSU, UB), Sarah Finnegan (LSU, BB, FX), Jada Glenn (Auburn, VT), Derrian Gobourne (Auburn, FX), Taylor Krippner (Auburn, BB)

California Grand With No. 2 UCLA, No. 9 California, No. 14 UC Davis and No. 33 Michigan State

When to Find It on the TV Guide: Saturday, January 12 at 9 p.m. ET

Why You Should Clear Space on Your DVR: The best kind of quad meets are the ones with a little bit of everything, and this one certainly qualifies. No. 2 UCLA came out strong in its debut last week, and it would only take a few changes, possibly including the much-anticipated floor debut of Margzetta Frazier, for the defending national champions to answer the challenge set by Oklahoma’s imperious performance in week one. California likewise had a strong meet apart from a wobbly beam rotation and a fairly strict run of judging. Watch for freshman Milan Clausi to possibly join the all around. UC Davis had its strongest ever opening meet at the NorCal Classic on Sunday despite the absence of star sophomore Kyla Kessler while Michigan State had a rough outing to start 2019, particularly on bars where it had two scores in the 8.0-range, having to count one of them.

Routines to Check Out If You Can’t Rewatch Everything: Katelyn Ohashi (UCLA, FX), Grace Glenn (UCLA, UB, BB), Kyla Ross (UCLA VT, UB), Milan Clausi (Cal, VT, FX), Toni-Ann Williams (Cal, FX), Emi Watterson (Cal, UB), Kelley Hebert (UC Davis, FX),  Alyssa Ito (UC Davis, BB), Alaina Raybon (MSU, FX), Ella Douglas (MSU, BB, FX), Ashley Hoeflich (MSU, VT, FX)

  1. OK drinking game time on the Utah at BYU meet…

BYU has a big Cougar (their mascot) on their FX mat… Good natured college rivalries being what they are there is a little game to see is a Ute can modify their FX choreography just enough to finish on top of the Cougar and end her routine with a emphatic face punch to the Cougar…

Last time Utah was at BYU was 2017 when Tiffani Lewis did the honors…
