Last Week in College Gym: October 29

During the offseason, it can be difficult to keep up with all the news and training updates happening across the teams. So each week, we will provide a curation of the most exciting upgrades, as well as other important news happening in the college gym world. Note the majority of the training updates highlighted will feature new skills and not someone training their same routine from the past season, for example.

Finally, note we are only able to share links to updates posted on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and not Instagram Stories or Snapchat. However, we will try to note any clips of note that we see on those disappearing platforms.

Pitt Prepares for Season

Pitt head coach Samantha Snider posted a training montage on her Instagram. Notably, sophomore Haley Brechwald (clip 1) and senior Brittany West (clips 2 and 4), who are both returning from injury, showed some solid beam work. Another highlight comes from freshman Katie Chamberlain (clip 10), who showed a beautiful gainer side aerial on beam.

Madison Ward-Sessions Training Exciting Tumbling

Utah State senior Madison Ward-Sessions is upping her tumbling game. The Aggie is training a round off directly to tucked full-in, as well as the same entry into a double pike. Omitting the roundoff is a unique take on tumbling we don’t see much in college gymnastics.

Olivia Keller Shows Off Her “Super Powers”

UW-Oshkosh freshman Olivia Keller had a beautiful double layout on floor during training this week. The team claims her “super power” is flight, and we just might have to agree.

Sophie Bochenek Trains E Pass

Pitt Sophomore Sophie Bochenek showed a solid full-in onto the regular floor. She competed floor a few times in 2018, but this new pass should help her challenge for a regular spot in the lineup.

Illinois Works Bars Upgrades

The Illini shared bars upgrades at a recent practice. Kylie Noonan added a big Tkatchev, and Brittany Jones showed bars work, a Jaeger, for the first time in several years. Torie Stotz also showed a Tkatchev to pak.

Maegan Chant Works New Front Handspring Pike Half Vault

After just one vault appearance last season, Florida junior Maegan Chant is looking to change that pattern with this dynamic front handspring pike half. She previously competed a Tsuk full.

Shaun Herzog Trains High Bar

Minnesota senior Shaun Herzog has been busy getting his high bar routine ready for season. His routine features an opening release combination and includes several Tkatchev variations, including a Liukin.

Molly Cianchette Catches a New Release

UW-Eau Claire sophomore Molly Cianchette caught her Jaeger for the first time this week. Cianchette didn’t see much action last season, but with a little more consistency and cleaning up, her routine could be an exciting addition to the Blugold bar lineup.

Instagram Story and Snapchat Roundup

Danielle Mulligan Trains New Event

New Hampshire posted a video to its Instagram story of senior Danielle Mulligan training a Yurchenko full onto a hard surface. She hasn’t competed vault yet in college, but she’s added a new event to her repertoire each of her three years so far. Could she add vault in 2019 to complete her all around set?

Taylor Worthington Making Her Comeback

Bowling Green junior Taylor Worthington, who is coming back from an Achilles injury, is vaulting again.

Riley Danielson Upgrades Vault

Kent State’s Riley Danielson is working a Tsuk tuck full. The freshman competed a half in J.O.

Dani Malecha on the Comeback Track

UW-Eau Claire freshman Dani Malecha started training Tkachevs again after being out most of her senior season.
