During the offseason, it can be difficult to keep up with all the news and training updates happening across the teams. So each week, we will provide a curation of the most exciting upgrades, as well as other important news happening in the college gym world. Note the majority of the training updates highlighted will feature new skills and not someone training their same routine from the past season, for example.
Finally, note we are only able to share links to updates posted on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and not Instagram Stories or Snapchat. However, we will try to note any clips of note that we see on those disappearing platforms.
Haylee Roe Joins the 10.0 Vault Training Club
Illinois senior Haylee Roe is training a Yurchenko one and a half, an upgrade from a full. She’s still working it onto a soft surface but is landing securely.
Sophie Bochenek Trains a 10.0 Vault
Pittsburgh sophomore Sophie Bochenek showed a Yurchenko one and a half at the most recent intrasquad. This is an upgrade from the full she competed last season.
Cameron Bock Trains New Skills
Michigan sophomore Cameron Bock posted a montage of clips of him training new skills for the 2019 season, including a new back three and a half to front layout.
Alexis Vasquez Training Unique Beam Skill
Denver freshman Alexis Vasquez is training a Y turn on beam, something that’s unique by college gymnastics standards. We’re hopeful it makes it into her routine.
Utah Holds First Intrasquad of Season
Last week, Utah held its first intrasquad of the season. This week, floor passes from the intrasquad were posted on social media. Cristal Isa, Makenna Merrell-Giles, Mykayla Skinner and Macey Roberts were featured. Notably, newcomer Isa showed a tucked full-in for her first pass.
UCLA Gymnasts Training 10.0 SV Vaults
UCLA is working hard training 10.0 start value vaults. Junior Kyla Ross is training a Yurchenko one and a half, as are freshman Sekai Wright and junior Gracie Kramer. Sophomore Kendal Poston is working a front handspring pike half and Margzetta Frazier is training a double-twisting Yurchenko. Which vaults materialize in competition remains to be seen for the Bruins, who are known for showing vault difficulty in preseason that may not be competed come January or even April.
Florida Freshmen
Florida freshmen have been featured in training clips this week. Savannah Schoenherr is training a straddled Jaeger and a Yurchenko one and a half. Leah Clapper is training a triple series on beam. Nya Reed is training a double layout on floor and a Yurchenko one and a half. Halley Taylor is training a one-armed back handspring to layout step-out on beam. Trinity Thomas is training a gorgeous mixed series on beam and a Pak to Van Leeuwen on bars.
Alabama Working Dismount Precision
Alabama posted one of its first training videos of the year to Instagram. Included in the montage of bar dismounts was a great double layout from freshman Emily Gaskins.
Taylor Houchin Trains Double Twisting Yurchenko
Nebraska junior Taylor Houchin showed a big Yurchenko double twist on instagram this week.
Arkansas Intrasquad
Clips were posted from an Arkansas instraquad this week, including a Yurchenko one and a half from freshman Amanda Elswick. Sophomore Kailey Gillings showed a big piked Jaeger and a triple series on beam. Freshman Kennedy Hambrick is training a two layout step-out series and a cartwheel to gainer full dismount on beam.
Big Vaults from Missouri
Missouri senior Morgan Porter is training a Yurchenko one and a half. Freshman Hannah McCrary is also training the same vault. Junior Aspen Tucker is training a double-twisting Yurchenko.

Sydney Townsend Training Omelianchik
The Michigan sophomore competed a Yurchenko one and a half last season and is now training an Omelianchik (another 10.0 start value vault).
Courtney Loper Back In Action
After missing the majority of 2018, Denver junior Courtney Loper has been working hard to get back into shape. Denver’s Instagram Story recently highlighted the Pioneer practicing her front aerial + side aerial beam combination.
Maddie Quarles Working Her Way Back
Denver freshman Maddie Quarles has been posting videos of herself doing skills on the trampoline, citing that it was her first time doing “real gymnastics” in a while. The freshman did not compete in her final J.O. season, presumably because she was injured.
Margzetta Frazier Training Full-In
The UCLA freshman is training a full-in on floor. Frazier has previously competed a double layout.
Sydney Converse Continues Comeback
Iowa State senior Sydney Converse continues to work her way back from an Achilles tear last December. She recently performed her first vault in months, a Yurchenko half to the pit.

Any news on Emma Engler? I noticed she wasn’t in the class pictures Auburn put on Instagram
We are unsure about Engler. However, she is still listed on the official roster on Auburn’s site. She doesn’t have a picture there, so it’s possible she missed picture day for some reason yet is still on the team. We’ll keep an eye on it!
I really love this site and appreciate all the hard work that goes into it keeping news current. I’m new to college gymnastics (started watching about 6 years ago) but it’s probably one of my favorite sports to follow. I always thought of college gymnastics as ‘lesser than’ and never really paid much attention to it– now I’m addicted! Your site is awesome for someone like me– I love the rankings area most. I love seeing the scores from all the meets and I’m really into the rivalries (UCLA vs Oklahoma, Florida vs LSU, the SEC Championships) — and so on. You all do a great job of keeping us updated and as the sport continues to grow I’ve got no doubt the popularity of this site will as well. Sorry for the long rant– just wanted you all to know how much I enjoy the site. So thanks!
Thank you so much! We’re so glad you appreciate the site and find it useful!
