The Dismount: Week 5

By Christina Marmet, Elizabeth Grimsley and Caroline Medley

The season is really heating up as fans were treated to a close showdown between in-conference rivals Alabama and Florida while other lesser-known teams notched upsets of their own, such as Bridgeport’s win over N.C. State and Temple’s win over Pittsburgh. While the top teams are solidifying their places, others farther down are still fighting for those ideal slots going into the RQS part of the season and eventually regionals.
No. 8 Denver, No. 20 Nebraska, No. 55 TWU at No. 1 Oklahoma
Full Results | OU: 197.675 | DU: 194.500 | Nebraska: 194.450 | TWU: 193.050
VT: Nichols 9.925 | UB: Nichols 9.950 | BB: Nichols 10.000 | FX: Nichols 9.975 | AA: Nichols 39.850While the Sooners were almost certain to come out on top, the fight for second place really what was the most exciting in this quad meet. That said, both Denver and Nebraska had rough performances and competed well under their full capabilities. Nebraska had rough beam and

floor rotations, and was forced to count falls and very shaky sets on both. Denver was forced to pay the price of putting up only five athletes only and had to count a 8.750 from Rachel Fielitz, leading to a subpar event total of 47.975. The Pioneers also had a shaky bars rotation before picking themselves up on the last two events. TWU held its ground for three rotations, but closed out the meet with a rocky beam rotation and was forced to count a few falls.
Meanwhile, Maggie Nichols continued her quest to be the best freshman ever and swept yet again all four events as well as the all-around all while scoring her second 10.0 of the season this time on balance beam. She also recorded a 9.975 on floor. We have never been so close to witnessing another perfect 40.0 in NCAA gymnastics history.
No. 11 Missouri at No. 2 LSU
Full Results | LSU: 197.425 | Mizzou: 195.425
VT: Gnat, Hambrick 9.950 | UB: Harrold 9.875 | BB: Finnegan 9.950 | FX: Gnat 9.950 | AA: Edney 39.375LSU continued its dominance this weekend, scoring another solid mid-197 to outlast Missouri and extend its conference win streak with yet another win. Ashleigh Gnat and Myia Hambrick ed the way on vault with 9.950s while Ruby Harrold was rewarded for her unique bar routine, scoring a 9.875. Sarah Finnegan also performed well on her best event, notching a

9.95 on beam while Kennedi Edney, once again not slated for floor, was subbed into the lineup, hit and won her second all around title in a row with a 39.375. Missouri continued to show the loss of Morgan Porter, only managing a mid-195 after having trouble across the events, counting a fall on bars and sub-9.7 scores on floor. Kennedi Harris did come through with a 9.9 on the event though and Britney Ward hit a stellar 9.925 on vault as well as a 9.9 on beam.
No. 3 Florida at No. 6 Alabama
Full Results | Alabama: 197.825 | UF: 197.425
VT: Guerrero, Slocum 9.925 | UB: Winson 9.950 | BB: Guerrero 9.950 | FX: Winson 10.000 | AA: Winson 39.700

In arguably the best matchup of the weekend, both teams put on a thriller, forcing the outcome to be determined by the last couple of routines. But what really sealed the deal for the Crimson Tide’s upset on its Power of Pink night was Kiana Winston’s perfect 10 on floor. Up until the last rotation, the teams were neck-and-neck with Alabama leading Florida by the slimmest of

margins after each of the first three rotations.Alex McMurtry and Kennedy Baker were their typical superb selves but it wasn’t enough to match the Tide as the Gators faltered ever so slightly on beam while Alabama nailed floor. Aside from Winston’s 10.0, Nickie Guerrero added a 9.9, Maddie Desch a 9.925 and Aja Sims a 9.950 to the event total, sealing the win and a season high for the team after a couple of mediocre meets the past weekend.
No. 15 California at No. 4 Utah
Full Results | Utah: 196.450 | Cal: 195.725
VT: Merrell, Skinner 9.900 | UB: Richardson, Lewis 9.850 | BB: Lee, Merrell 9.875 | FX: Skinner 9.950 | AA: Skinner 39.500Subdued by the new of leader Toni-Ann WIlliams’ torn Achilles tendon, California did a fair job making up for the scores lost by her absence. While no one individual stepped up, the team had a solid performance nevertheless. However, if it still wants to make something of the season, it will need to be more than average and find some scores in the 9.9-range. Utah, on

the other hand, chose this competition to meltdown on bars—one of its usual great events—counting a fall which pushed the overall total down from a great score to merely a good one. However, the team certainly made up for the mistakes on floor as the lineup went 49.475, backed by three 9.9+ scores including a 9.95 from freshman phenom MyKayla Skinner.
No. 5 UCLA at No. 50 Arizona State
Full Results | UCLA: 197.150 | ASU: 194.600
VT: Ross 9.925 | UB: Lee 9.925 | BB: Ross 9.975 | FX: Kocian 9.950 | AA: Kocian 39.625

UCLA continued to slowly shape into form with its roster of superstar competitors. Kyla Ross competed in her first all around competition but fell on both bars and in her floor debut, but came back and won vault (9.925) and beam (9.975). Madison Kocian also competed in the all around, winning the title with a season-high 39.625, backed by her pair of 9.95s on beam and floor. Fans also got to see the season debut of Katelyn

Ohashi on floor. Arizona State showed up at its meet as well, posting a season high 194.600. In fact, it was the team’s highest score since March of 2016, led by freshman Ashley Szafranski’s 9.875 on bars.
No. 7 Michigan at No. 44 Maryland
Full Results | UM: 196.475 | UMD: 195.625
VT: McLean 9.925 | UB: Artz 9.900 | BB: Marinez 9.950 | FX: Chiarelli 9.975 | AA: Artz 39.050

It was another sub=par road showing for Michigan as the Wolverines started out with a bit of trouble on bars, with Emma McLean scoring only a 7.200 and Lexi Funk posting just a 8.950. But the team stepped it up after the hardship, led by Talia Chiareli’s near-perfect floor routine that went 9.975 and two stellar beam scores in Lauren Marinez’s 9.950 and Funk’s 9.925. Maryland also showed up to the

meet with a season-best performance by nearly a point. Alecia Farina and Emily Brauckmuller each tallied 9.900s on floor and the team had 12 scores at 9.800 or above across four events. It wasn’t a perfect meet for the Terps, though, as they had to count three scores in the 9.600s.
No. 8 Denver at No. 11 Southern Utah
Full Results | SUU: 196.700 | DU: 196.500
VT: Webb, Karr 9.875 | UB: Townsend, Ramirez, Ogden 9.875 | BB: Ramirez, Bayer 9.900 | FX: Ramirez 9.925 | AA: Ramirez 39.475The competition came down to the wire as both teams looked to redeem themselves from rough first competitions of the weekend. After all routines were complete but one, the scores were tied at 196.500, but Danielle Ramirez’ 9.925 on floor sealed not only the win for Southern Utah but a program record, bringing its total up to a 196.700. The Flippin’ Birds hit all six beam routines after staying on on only two a few nights ago. But a rotation with two 9.9s helped along the team to its eventual win. Despite losing, Denver also was much improved from Friday, putting up six girls on vault for the

first time this season and led by Kaitlyn Schou’s 9.900 on floor.
No. 10 Kentucky at No. 9 Georgia
Full Results | UGA: 196.500 | UK: 196.150
VT: Reynolds 9.875 | UB: Vaculik, Dickson 9.900 | BB: Dukes, Hyland 9.925 | FX: Vega 9.900 | AA: Reynolds 39.400While Kentucky improved from its past two weeks of moderate scores, it didn’t come back quite to its record-breaking form it was in to start the season, giving Georgia the win. However, the Gymdogs weren’t flawless as a fall and two scores in the 9.600s dashed any hope of another 197. But on the bright side, the team

regained Natalie Vaculik to the bar lineup, who was out for the first part of the season with Mono and Strep Throat but scored a 9.900 in her return. Sabrina Vega was also back from illness but Sydney Snead with still out due to precaution on her previous back injury. The Wildcats had some highlights as well—Sidney Dukes and Alex Hyland each scored 9.925 on beam to lead the team—but overall they weren’t as sharp as they’ve been this season.
