Maryland has become a steady top-30 team over the past several seasons, and 2024 was no different. The graduating routines were important, but the incoming class is stacked with three former four-star recruits, as well as one former three-star. The Terps will hope to keep building on the past several years of progress in 2025.
2024 Rewind
No. 26 overall | No. 5 at Big Ten championships | No. 26 in regular season | Regional semi-final
The Terps hit March running and never looked back. After some inconsistencies early in the year, and even one bars disaster in February, Maryland got to work in the second half of the season to secure a solid finish. This is an up-and-coming team that certainly has its sights set on building to the Sweet Sixteen and an evening session berth at Big Tens, so this result was a solid building block, but not the end goal.

Vault
2024 Event Ranking: No. 24 | NQS: 49.195 | Average: 49.079
Event Overview: Vault was a steady and solid event in 2024 but never broke through into the numbers the Terps will need to progress into the next echelon of teams. The freshmen are excellent here, and this team is known for developing 10.0 start values from unexpected gymnasts.

Bars
2024 Event Ranking: No. 22 | NQS: 49.280 | Average: 48.985
Event Overview: The Terps had a wild ride on bars for the first half of the year but settled in once March arrived and figured it out. This was partially due to adjusting the lineup, and partially about individuals finding consistency. Freshman Sarah Saville shines here.

Beam
2024 Event Ranking: No. 31 | NQS: 49.190 | Average: 49.004
Event Overview: Beam was Maryland’s weakest piece, in large part due to some two-fall outings in February. This is a good event for the freshmen, Rayna Engelmayer and Saville in particular. It should look steadier in 2025.

Floor
2024 Event Ranking: No. 30 | NQS: 49.345 | Average: 49.260
Event Overview: The Terps were strong on floor but didn’t quite keep pace with the huge numbers we saw from other squads. This is the event where senior departures will be felt most strongly, though all three departing routines were depth more than lineup staples, so it shouldn’t be too much of a shock.

Is this the year Maryland will finally take down its 2004 overall program record? Maybe. It certainly has the talent; if it can put up an across-the-board hit, it’s possible. If that happens, certainly some event records will fall too. The 2024 squad came close on vault, bars, and beam.
The Big Picture
It’s time for the Terps to take the next step. They’ve established themselves as a regionals regular and are poised to break through to the regional final. The roster is talented, and the returners spent the back half of 2024 learning how to hit consistently. One or two breakthrough meets seem just around the corner.

Layla Hammer and Logan Buckmon both showed multiple events at the Maryland intrasquad last weekend. They could be contenders for lineup spots.
