Fantasy Central: Week 10

[UPDATE 3/10/21 9:44 am]: Michigan State has canceled the remainder of its season, and Ohio State will take a bye this week.

Fantasy gym—like everything since March—is a little different this season. The official game isn’t running because of all of the uncertainty. We know a number of you are playing in private leagues, so Fantasy Central lives on!

We’re keeping the College Fantasy Gymnastics weekly cadence as our guide: As far as we’re concerned, the fantasy “week” begins with any Wednesday meets, and ends with Tuesday meets; that’s why you’ll find us here every Tuesday talking about “next week”.

Reminder: Alaska, Bridgeport, Brockport, Brown, Cornell, Cortland, Gustavus, Ithaca, Penn, Sac State, Southern Connecticut, UC Davis, Ursinus, West Chester and Yale are not competing this season.

COVID Schedule Changes

We’re still waiting to see what Ohio State is doing this weekend. Region 5 Insider reported that Michigan State would be ending its season early, but we’re also waiting to hear the official announcement from Michigan State on that front as well. Another thing to keep an eye on is Oregon State’s meet at Stanford. The Cardinal has canceled enough meets so far that any competition on the schedule has at least a little bit of doubt. As of now, Tuesday morning, the meet is still on, though.

Week 10 Byes and Doubles

Byes: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Missouri

Doubles: George Washington, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, San Jose State, Stanford, Temple, Towson, Washington, West Virginia

California, Washington, Stanford and San Jose state compete on Wednesday, March 10. Denver, BYU, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh compete on Thursday.

Deep Cuts for Deep Leagues in Week 10

Tips for those of you in leagues with 10-plus players, where you need to be a little more creative to fill out lineups; especially in SEC bye weeks. 

Vault: Robyn Kelley is having quite the breakout year for New Hampshire. She’s a steady vaulter, and notched 9.9s on beam and floor last week. If she’s somehow still available in your league, waste no time! Elexis Edwards was missing for Ohio State. She has a big injury history, so it’s concerning, but we have no details. Towson’s Lauren Bolen has scored a 9.900 on vault this year and has been consistently above 9.800 since mid-February.

Bars: Jada Mazury competed for the first time for San Jose State last week. She notched a 9.825 on bars and had a beam fall; last season her beam topped out at a 9.875. If you’re scrambling to fill both lineups due to the SEC bye, nab her! Alex Folcher is Bowling Green’s top bar worker, and she scored her first 9.900 of the year last week. In bad news, Mara Titsolarej was on crutches and out of LIU’s lineup this week. Nika Takagi was also missing for the Sharks. Natalie Hamp is on a three-meet 9.875 roll for Northern Illinois. Her low this year? 9.800.

Beam: Arizona’s Zaza Brovedani had a slow start, but she put up a second 9.825 on beam this week and added bars for the first time this year. Alexis Hankins has been a beam rock all season, with all of her scores falling between 9.800 and 9.875. Oregon State had a rough start, but Kristina Peterson has been solid on beam through it all.

Floor: Looks like Kyla Bryant is back in the all around! She’s not quite firing on all cylinders yet—who can blame her—but she nailed a 9.900 on floor. Martina Comin is hitting her stride; she put up 9.8s on both vault and floor this week. Ball State’s Claudia Goyco is on a roll on floor, nailing her second 9.900 of the year last week.

Starts, Sits and Pickups for Week 10

Are you playing in a smaller league and still looking for advice about big names? Are you in a deep league but not sure what to do with that OU beam specialist? These tips are for you!

Vault: Olivia Trautman added vault this week. We can assume she’s targeting conference championships or regionals for an all around return if she’s able. It’s always possible she’ll add beam or floor this week. Rose Casali has disappeared from her three pieces, and we’re not sure why. If she’s healthy, we imagine she’ll be back this week, although if she tweaked something or was ill, it’s possible she’ll rest a second week to be fresh for Big 12s. Put her in lineups only if you can take a zero.

Bars: One of many random absences, we didn’t see Audrey Davis on bars in Oklahoma’s second meet of the weekend. She was in vault and beam lineups, though, so if you can stomach another zero, we’d keep her in this lineup this week. Maddie Mariani has been surpassed by teammates in the bars and beam lineups the past few weeks. Given their successful scoring, higher numbers than she showed in exhibition, it seems wise to sit her on both for this week. Naomi Morrison got the nod on bars. Speaking of surprise absences, Alexia Burch was pulled from bars for Lucy Stanhope, who struggled. It’s anyone’s guess who makes the lineup this week, but it seems likely that the Utah State contest will be a dry run to test out Pac-12 lineups. Alma Kuc is back! And given her 9.925 and California’s record bars day, it’s pretty safe to say she’s there to stay.

Beam: Surprise! Carly Woodard is back, and we’d have to imagine she’s sticking around. In less fun news, Shylen Murakami and Hannah Nipp are AWOL for Southern Utah. We don’t have details, so proceed with caution. Abby Heiskell had a statement-making 9.925 for Michigan; it seems she’s solidified her spot in this lineup. Minnesota has seemingly settled on Abbie Nylin over Lexi Montgomery here.

Floor: In Abby Brenner’s absence, we saw Carly Bauman on floor for a 9.800 for the Wolverines. She seems to have passed Reyna Guggino for that lineup, and it seems likely Bev Plocki will put her in this lineup again this week. Abby Stainton was pulled from floor in favor of Adeline Rieder. Stainton has a much higher score potential, so we expect to see her back unless she’s injured.
