Team Intro Video Rankings

Intro videos are an important part of any gymnastics meet. The teams want to get the fans pumped up and ready to cheer before the meet begins, and having a great video to get the fans riled up is an important part. There have been a number of intro videos this year that have made some noise. But which ones did we like the best?

We judged our top 10 videos to determine the best one in 2016. But we didn’t rank them all (partly due to the fact that not every team has its video online yet). So let us know what you think of the ones we did rank and which great videos we missed out on in the comments or on Twitter.

Love. The concept is amazing and the effects on the highlight footage is cool how it makes the gymnast sort of glow.

Total: 9.3/10I like how each athlete is highlighted! (except Elizabeth Yu, who I am not convinced has ever done gymnastics? Do she exist? Is she real?)  Using the commentators as the voice over was great. This one is really good.

I really like how they introduce the girls with highlights of them and commentary from live meets. Always use voiceovers. It’s so much better than just music. Always.

Whatever instagram filter they used on this… I want. Seriously, I loved the way it looked. Very different from every other video. Could be a bit longer, but I liked it!

This song was used in at LEAST three intro video. Stop. But besides that I liked everything about this. The speed of the clips, the effects used on them, the selection of highlights — all good.

Similar lighting to Minnesota, but they have some really unique camera angles! Love the movement. Also has some great competition footage. A bit too aggressive on the jump cuts for me though.

The dark theme is really in this year. Auburn did a good job integrating crowd reaction shots and noise. That always pumps me up and especially knowing they had something to be excited about last year.

A little too much strobe light for me, but I could listen to DD talk for 18 hours and not get tired. The practice footage wasn’t great quality, especially when matched up with the lovely competition shots.

So this is a hype video and not technically an intro one, so I’m going to let the length slide. That being said, anything with D-D Breaux voice over is *100 emoji*. I also love the dark beginning and the inspiration feel to it. It not only makes me want to watch gymnastics but makes me want to go out and do it myself.

Minnesota
Score: 8.85
Casey
Creativity: 2.8/3
Execution: 2.6/3
Pump Up Ability: 2.5/3
Length: 0.9/1

The lighting for the practice footage is great, wish the competition footage was nicer though. Could use a bit better pump up song though.

I like the dark videography mixed with the meet highlights. And ending on a Lindsay Mable mega-full on vault is A+.

Does Katelyn Ohashi really wake up at 4:57 AM? This is my concern. Also, of course UCLA has a custom song about them. Of course. Great videography.

I like the concept of this is the preparation behind what you see on meet day. It just seems to last a tad long and doesn’t get me über excited to watch some gymnastics. But overall it was really good.

California
Score: 7.7

Creativity: 2.1/3

Pump Up Ability: 2.1/3

I wish they didn’t start off with “We Are Dancers” because I thought it was the dance team for a second. Wish the song was less bubbly. I have a lot of wishes.

Elizabeth
Creativity: 2.6/3
Execution: 2.4/3
Pump Up Ability: 2.1/3

I liked the “We Are” part but Andy Grammer isn’t a great pump up musician. I can see those highlight clips being much more pump up-able with a different song.

George Washington
Score: 7.5
Casey
Creativity: 1.8/3
Execution: 2.1/3
Pump Up Ability: 2.4/3
Length: 0.8/1

The static effect was the best part for me. Also, where did they get those stock aerial shots of D.C.? You know they didn’t take that footage for this video. If they did, I want access to their helicopter.

Elizabeth
Creativity: 2.5/3
Execution: 2.2/3
Pump Up Ability: 2.4/3
Length: 0.8/1
Total: 7.9/10

I like the shots of D.C. And the song started off weird but got good and more pump up-y as it went on. The “slideshow” of pictures style was a bit elementary, but overall I liked it.

Denver
Score: 6.45
Casey
Creativity: 1.8/3
Execution: 1.8/3
Pump Up Ability: 1.8/3
Length: 0.6/1
Total: 6.0/10

I’m sure they set up the aspect ratio to fit the big screen in their arena… but it was so awkward. All I got were shots of torsos or close ups of their eyes. You couldn’t see any skills.

Elizabeth
Creativity: 2.3/3
Execution: 1.8/3
Pump Up Ability: 2/3
Length: 0.8/1
Total: 6.9/10

Voiceovers are always great, but that’s pretty much all I liked. The narrowness of the screen was not cute and the training clips seemed out of place. I need, like, a girl almost crying from conditioning so hard if you’re going to use training clips of not-even routines.

Honorable Mention: Georgia
We couldn’t find a link to Georgia’s intro video, but it features a Kevin Copp is excited about a great routine voiceover. So, you know. It’s awesome. And it gives you chills when you’re in the arena and everything’s quiet just for a second. The guys at Hunkerdown Productions know how to get a crowd ready to watch some gymnastics.

  1. Thanks for the love and I can confirm Elizabeth does in fact exist, although her gymnastics is limited due to injury.
