leotard rankings

Leotard Rankings: Clemson Leotard Design Contest

A couple weeks ago we put out a call to action for members of the gymternet to send in their best Clemson leotard designs for the chance at being included in a future leotard ranking. That future leotard ranking is today’s! There were a lot of good designs submitted, and we had a hard time choosing our favorites.

Agree with our scores? Which design do you like most? Let us know in the comments or on social media!

Hannah: 8.780

Elizabeth: 8.800

Design 2.8/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.9/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

I love this a LOT, and that surprises me. The black or deep purple looks fantastic at the bottom and as it fades into the purple and dark orange at the top and on the sleeves. It’s so seamless. This might be my favorite leo of the bunch.

Tavia: 8.700

Design 2.7/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

There is nothing not to love about this design! It’s giving me sunset at dusk in all the best ways. I love the ombre sleeves, the neckline and the use of sparkle.

Talitha: 9.100

Design 2.8/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.9/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

Oh this is the first leotard we see that uses black, and I love it. There’s something really classy and elegant about this leo, and the sleeves are gorgeous.

Claire: 8.600

Design 2.7/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

This is an absolutely striking design that reminds me of that fabulous Florida leo. I love the drama, and I love the unexpected color palette.

Tara: 8.700

Design 2.8/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

I’m surprisingly loving this. The dark colors are so dramatic. I also love how the sleeve ombre starts with purple at the shoulders so it flows into the purple on the top of the bodice.

Reese: 8.140

Elizabeth: 8.000

Design 2.4/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.6/3

Love this! The darker “mood” is nice, and I am of course obsessed with the purple and orange ombre. Wouldn’t mind actually seeing this become a reality.

Tavia: 8.100

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.7/3

I really like this design a lot! The way the purple and orange are incorporated is just right. I love the ombre and the faux neckline, too.

Talitha: 7.600

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

This is a bit too intensely orange for me, but I love the design. I wish the sleeves were longer and could show off more purple.

Claire: 8.300

Design 2.7/3, Fabric 1/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I love this. The ombre mesh, the orange piping against the purple body, the logo on the hip… Flawless! The only small change I’d make is using pearls instead of purple crystals. Overall, beautiful design.

Tara: 8.700

Design 2.8/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

Ooh, I love this. I love the richness of the colors and how the ombre flows. The purple rhinestones are a great finishing touch. I’m going to echo Elizabeth here and say I wouldn’t mind seeing this one become a reality.

Annie: 7.880

Elizabeth: 7.900

Design 2.4/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.6/3

This reminds me a lot of an Auburn leo, which is fitting since both are the Tigers. I love the feathered look to the purple and orange here, and the white mesh works nicely with the color combo.

Tavia: 7.000

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I like how the purple and orange are incorporated in a fiery, almost floral design. I wish the paw print was a little smaller, but I just know this leotard will be comfortable to compete in.

Talitha: 7.700

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I really like this design, the color choice and the tiger paw on the back. I’m not a big fan of the white part, though.

Claire: 8.400

Design 2.7/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0/5/1, School Spirit 0.9/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

Clemson’s women’s ultimate team is called the Tiger Lilies, and this gives me major “tiger lily” vibes. I also love that this actually incorporates the white. I’ve got to disagree with Tavia… The giant paw print is perfect!

Tara: 8.400

Design 2.6/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.7/3

The front gives me faux-tiger print vibes, and I love it. I love how the colors are used, and the white pairs well with the purple and orange design. The tiger paw is a nice touch, though I wish it was ever-so-slightly smaller.

Frede: 7.340

Elizabeth: 8.400

Design 2.6/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.9/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.6/3

I love this and all its athletic-looking goodness. It’s very ball sport uniform, which is a good thing. I love the white, the logo on the chest and the subtle purple and orange.

Tavia: 6.600

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.9/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

I love the sleeves and the use of the Clemson logo, though once again I tend to shy away from white leos. I like the use of straps on the back, and the paw on the hip was a nice touch as well.

Talitha: 6.300

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.9/3

I like the sleeves here, especially the tiger stripe-like use of orange rhinestones. I’m not a fan of shiny white fabric, though.

Claire: 8.100

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.9/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I really dig this! Simple, clean, athletic—it checks all of my boxes! The orange criss-cross on the back is a lot of fun, and the pops of color in the sleeves and body work perfectly.

Tara: 7.300

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I love the particular Clemson logo used here! The sleeves flow well into the body, and I again love the ombre. It’s a good balance of white, purple and orange.

Debbie: 7.160

Elizabeth: 7.100

Design 2.2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

Love this a lot! I’m pretending the oranges would match in the real version. The orange to purple ombre on the chest is to die for, and I love the sleeves. I would have liked a bit more sparkle though.

Tavia: 6.900

Design 2.1/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

You can never go wrong with ombre and a high neckline! I am only wishing for a little more sparkle. Maybe school colored jewels would help to further make this design shine.

Talitha: 7.500

Design 2.1/3, Fabric 1/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I love this design and the ombre chest. The white part is a bit underwhelming, though.

Claire: 6.900

Design 2.1/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

The orange and purple ombre is lovely and pairs really well with the white mesh sleeves, but it needs a little extra oomph. Maybe “Clemson” in orange and purple crystals on the sleeves?

Tara: 7.400

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I love the orange to purple ombre and the ruched fabric! I also enjoy the white mesh sleeves and how the rhinestones are incorporated overall. The only thing I would change is making the “Clemson” on the hip be the actual Clemson logo.

Catherine: 6.540

Elizabeth: 7.000

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

I’ll always like a simple white body because it gives such an athletic look. The overall look is a bit too simple for me, though, but it has potential.

Tavia: 6.300

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

I love the sleeves and the throwback feel. The orange jewels on the purple sleeves are really doing it for me. I personally don’t love white leotards, but this design could be passable if it’s made of a thicker fabric.

Talitha: 6.800

Design 2.2/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.4/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I’m intrigued by this design. I really like the white body, as well as the ombre sleeves, though I wish the latter were purple and orange. I’m not a fan of the school name on the chest, but it has a lot of potential.

Claire: 6.500

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

I love a simple athletic design, so there’s a lot that I really like about this: the clean white bodice, the orange crystals on the purple sleeves. I wish there were just a little more orange and a little more school spirit (a giant crystal Tiger paw under “Clemson” would do the trick).

Tara: 6.100

Design 1.7/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.9/3

My favorite part is the purple ombre sleeves with orange rhinestones. I don’t love how simple the body is—I’m just not vibing with the script Clemson being the only thing on the white bodice or the rhinestones on the neckline. Maybe a touch of sparkle would help it?

Grace: 6.440

Elizabeth: 6.400

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

I’m definitely intrigued here. I think it has serious potential, and I like the shade of purple.

Tavia: 6.300

Design 1.7/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.9/1, Overall Appearance 1.9/3

I like the uniqueness of this design. The strategic placement of the sparkles is nice, and I like the lace overlay.

Talitha: 6.800

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.4/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

I’m intrigued by this design. The shade of purple is very pretty, though not necessarily very Clemson-y, and I love the white body, especially the semi-transparent part on the chest. The flowery pattern ruins it for me, though.

Claire: 6.800

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

The white bodice with sweetheart neckline and purple mesh overlay is really striking! The orange damask doesn’t quote work, but it’s close. I’d also change the crystals to orange for a little more school spirit.

Tara: 5.900

Design 1.6/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

This is more of a personal preference issue than anything, but I’ve never LOVED this design and I’m finding it hard to love this one either. The orange on purple is nice—it’s just not my favorite design in the world.

Georgia: 6.400

Elizabeth: 6.700

Design 1.9/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.1/3

I like this because I’m not of the opinion that every team leo needs to utilize all school colors. This is the shade of shiny orange I prefer, and it looks good with the ombre sleeves.

Tavia: 6.500

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

I love the ombre three-quarter length sleeves. I’m not sure how to feel about the two different shades of orange on the back, but overall I like this design.

Talitha: 5.000

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.2/1, Uniqueness 0.4/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

I find the color of the body a bit overwhelming here. Though I agree with Elizabeth that schools don’t always need to use all school colors, I can’t really see the team’s spirit here, and I’d rather see a whole purple leotard than a whole orange one.

Claire: 7.200

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.1/3

As CGN’s resident Clemson expert, THIS is the level of orange that I’m used to and expect (assuming the bodice would be Clemson orange to match the sleeves).

Tara: 6.600

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

This is a good one! Much like Elizabeth, I prefer this shade of orange. If the two different shades of orange matched, it would be even better. I would love a hint of purple to take it to the next level, but it’s still good.

Grace L: 6.020

Elizabeth: 6.200

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

First off, props for not using an online designer! I don’t know how I feel about the leaves, but I like the majority purple design with orange aspects.

Tavia: 6.000

Design 1.6/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.9/1, Overall Appearance 1.6/3

There’s a high neck and a keyhole back, so I’m sold on that. I like the idea of a purple design with orange accents. The cut-off point for the pattern looks like it would be flattering.

Talitha: 5.700

Design 1.7/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.4/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

I like the uniqueness of this design. However, I’m not a fan of flowery-patterned leotards, and I find this leo a bit too busy.

Claire: 6.400

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 1/1, Overall Appearance 1.9/3

Clemson was founded as an agricultural college, so I like this subtle nod to its history. I’m also never mad about a keyhole back!

Tara: 5.800

Design 1.6/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

Unique points for not using an online designer! I don’t love the floral-y design and the wavy lines, but I do love the purple bodice paired with orange accents.

Jazzi: 5.760

Elizabeth: 5.600

Design 1.6/3, Fabric 0.4/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.6/3

The sleeve ombre is obviously fantastic, but I don’t know how I feel about the shiny fabric. This one is just OK in my book.

Tavia: 5.600

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

This ombre is giving me life! I just wish it wasn’t mainly white on the body. The paw on the hip is always a nice touch.

Talitha: 5.000

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.4/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.4/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

The sleeves are gorgeous, but I don’t feel like they fit with the white body. The use of crystals is also a bit overwhelming, and I’m not a fan of the orange triangle on the chest.

Claire: 6.400

Design 1.9/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

The ombre portions are fabulous, especially the back paired with the starburst of crystals. The front is just too white. Even something as simple as changing the color of the crystals would really punch up the overall design.

Tara: 6.200

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.4/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

The more I look at this, the more it grows on me. I’m still not sure how I feel about the shiny fabric, but the rest is very enjoyable.

Taylor: 5.740

Elizabeth: 6.000

Design 1.7/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

This shiny purple fabric is great. I don’t know how I feel about it with the ombre—might be a bit much—but it’s a solid start.

Tavia: 5.800

Design 1.6/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

I really like the back of this design! The ombre fades into the rest of the fabric so seamlessly. The front has a little disconnect for me. Maybe it’s the amount of light purple without any breaks.

Talitha: 5.300

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.4/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.4/1, Uniqueness 0.4/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

I’m not a fan of the shiny purple fabric, but I can see the potential here!

Claire: 5.200

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.4/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.3/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

I agree with Tavia that the back is lovely, but the front needs a little something.

Tara: 6.400

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

I like this! I really enjoy how the ombre flows into the design, especially on the back. Like my fellow editors, I love the back, from the ombre to the rhinestones.

Lari: 5.620

Elizabeth: 5.700

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.4/1, Sparkle 0.4/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.6/3

This is my personal preference, but I don’t like when leos use a lot of this shade of orange. I feel like for me to like a future Clemson leo it’ll have to use orange very strategically. I like this design though.

Tavia: 6.000

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 1.6/3

I like the deep V, neckline and ombre sleeves. I think I would prefer this design if the colors were swapped with purple on the body and orange on the sleeve, but that’s just personal preference.

Talitha: 5.400

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.2/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

I wonder how this leotard would have looked like with a purple body and ombre orange sleeves—the orange wouldn’t have looked so overwhelming in my opinion. The excessive use of purple crystals on the chest gives this leotard a tacky feeling, too.

Claire: 4.600

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.4/1, Sparkle 0.2/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

I love the orange bodice, but I’m not crazy about the purple gemstones. I’d also like orange for the piping around the neck to add a little more balance.

Tara: 6.400

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

I like this overall. Like Tavia, I think I’d like it better with the purple and orange switched, but it’s not bad like this either. I’ve always loved this design when the rhinestones go over the deep V, and this is no exception.

Carrie: 5.500

Elizabeth: 5.300

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.4/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.6/3

I think I would have liked the ombre to start white and move into orange, but overall I love the concept. The purple is a bit of an afterthought, though. Maybe instead there could be a bolder sparkle design on the chest using purple rhinestones.

Tavia: 5.100

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

I wish the body wasn’t white-to-orange ombre. The neckline looks comfortable! I like the simple and sweet design, but maybe it could’ve been kicked up a notch with more sparkle or incorporating purple in the gems.

Talitha: 6.400

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.4/1, School Spirit 0.4/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

I really like this! I wish the color of the neck was more intensely purple, but there’s something really elegant about this leotard.

Claire: 5.000

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.3/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

This is a great jumping off point (that neckline is gorgeous!), but it needs a lot more pizzazz before it’s competition-worthy. Tweak the shade of purple, add a gigantic crystal Tiger paw logo on the chest and maybe “Clemson” in purple crystals on the back or sleeves, and this will be good to go.

Tara: 5.700

Design 1.7/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

I love the ombre, though the rest is a bit simple. The purple looks more black than purple, so it doesn’t stand out as much—part of me wants it to be more purple, in true Clemson fashion.

Bonus! Clemson Club Team Leo: 6.780

Elizabeth: 6.600

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

Love the idea of paying tribute to the club team that walked so Clemson’s DI team could run. This leo is a bit simple for obvious reasons, but I think it’s a good building block. I love the amount of purple used.

Tavia: 5.600

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

This is a simple, comfortable design. I like the use of purple with orange accents. I think it could use a little more sparkle.

Talitha: 7.400

Design 2.4/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

This is a sound design. I like the orange touches, and I can recognize the school spirit.

Claire: 7.200

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

This is an excellent club team leo. I love the orange side panels paired with the crystal accents, and the purple mesh is a great choice. To echo Elizabeth, I’d love to see the varsity team wear a zhuzhed-up version of this in honor of the club team that’s lobbied for this program for so long!

Tara: 7.100

Design 2.2/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

This is a very solid leo. I love the use of purple as a primary color with the orange accents and the rhinestone pattern. It’s not over the top, but it’s a great foundation.
