The Dismount: Week 7

It was a record-breaking weekend all around, as multiple teams broke program records and multiple gymnasts broke program records. We also saw some tight yet incredibly entertaining matchups from the top of the rankings to the bottom, making for a thrilling week seven you don’t want to have missed a second of. And you’re in luck—catch up on all the highlights in this week’s Dismount.

Most Emotional Comeback

Alyssa Baumann (Florida)

Whether it was because her teammates were out of the lineups due to contact tracing or she earned her way in, the senior competed in the all around for the first time in her collegiate career, shedding a few tears after nailing her first bar routine since the P&G Championships in 2016.

Routine of the Week

Leah Clapper (Florida)

Say what you want about Florida’s lineup strategy, but if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. And Florida’s placement of Clapper in the five hole Friday night certainly wasn’t broke as the junior scored a perfect 10 for her efforts—the first of her career.

Save of the Week

Kayla Bird (Oregon State)

Bird managed an Ellie Black-level save on beam in Oregon State’s meet against California Sunday afternoon. Either she’s a witch or the Beavers do some serious leg conditioning to prepare for situations like this one.

Performance of the Week

Luisa Blanco (Alabama)

This was a tough category to choose a winner for. Special shout out to Arkansas’ Kennedy Hambrick for her program record all around score. However, the Alabama sophomore performed just a touch better, notching 9.925s on vault, 9.950 on bars and 9.975s on beam and floor for a whopping 39.825 and an upset win over LSU.

Most Emotional Glow Up

Rutgers

The Scarlet Knights had a tough start to the season, with two 192s and then a pair of 194s. They hit all 24 routines at Minnesota, though, for a third-best in program history and road score program record 195.975. Once again, Umme Salim-Beasly is quietly elevating her squad.

Senior Standout

Hannah Nipp (Southern Utah)

How fitting was it that Hannah Nipp had some of her best routines in her collegiate career on senior night? Nipp scored 9.9-plus on her three signature events: bars, beam and floor. The senior’s 9.925 on bars was a career high.

Corniest Twitter Jokes

Iowa

It’s no secret that Iowa has some of the best social media in the game, but the Hawkeyes outdid themselves on Saturday by tweeting a series of corn-related jokes during their meet against Nebraska.

Best Sports Crossover

Margzetta Frazier (UCLA)

Junior Margzetta Frazier made headlines this weekend for her emotional FaceTime call with pop legend Janet Jackson, but she also gets bonus points for channeling her inner professional wrestler by celebrating her season-high beam performance with the People’s Elbow.

Most Underrated Commentator

Alisa Mowe

Mowe has commentated on Washington’s live streams for a while now, but this season she’s been added to the Pac-12 Network’s official broadcasts. At Sunday’s California at Oregon State meet, Mowe even went as far as explaining how routines need a certain number of A, B and C elements as a reason for why a gymnast might have lost start value on beam. Your favorite commentator would never…

  1. UGH Luisa Blanco was ridiculously overscored last weekend.

The scoring system needs to be seriously revamped. It’s like scores are being handed out at random. No differentiation at all what so ever.
