The Dismount: Week 6

Week six saw a lot of exciting moments, including the SEC’s return from its bye, perfect 10s and LIU’s first ever performance. You can catch up on all the highs, lows and controversies in this week’s Dismount.

Performance of the Week

Trinity Thomas (Florida)

We could probably name this performance of the year, and it would hold up through the end of the 2021 season. Thomas had the meet of her life at LSU, notching a 9.950 on beam, 9.975s on vault and bars and a perfect 10 on floor, getting as close to perfection across the board as any gator ever—literally. The junior’s all around total of 39.900 broke the Florida program record of 39.825, previously set by Gator greats Bridget Sloan, Alex McMurtry and Alaina Johnson, and is the fifth-best total in NCAA history.

Debut Performance of the Week

Kendall Whitman (George Washington)

To say Kendall Whitman had a great NCAA debut would be an understatement, as the freshman is taking NCAA gymnastics by storm. Whitman tied the program floor record with a 9.950, casually competing a routine with multiple E-passes. She also earned a 9.875 for her unique front handspring to front handspring pike half vault and scored a 9.800 on beam following a fall from her teammate and a long judging conference.

The Great Mascot Debate

Auburn at Missouri

Fun fact: Winner of this meet gets to keep its mascot. Loser has to use the other one it already has.

Stick of the Week

Ona Loper (Minnesota)

Following up her perfect 10 from last season, the Minnesota senior nailed another Yurchenko one and a half for her second perfect score on the event in her career.

Metroplex Challenge

To put it bluntly, we were appalled when we saw the crowd at Metroplex this weekend. So much so that we had to do a double take because we thought we were somehow watching the 2019 event by accident instead. We know it’s Texas, but the organizers at this meet and those in attendance have a public duty to follow regulations and not contribute to the spread of the coronavirus during the pandemic.
