There’s a lot that happens on the gymternet each week. So much so that it can be hard to keep track of it all. From training updates and COVID news to recruiting rumors and coaching announcements, we don’t blame you for missing some important points here and there.

But that’s where we come in. Last Week in College Gym is your one-stop shop for all the important headlines from the previous week in college gymnastics. No matter if you’re taking a social media break, went on vacation or just don’t have the capacity to follow every single gymnast, team and fan, we have you covered.

Top Storylines

Black athletes speak about their experiences with racism in gymnastics

We have heard from Tia Kiaku (Alabama), A’Miracal Phillips, Kennedy Finister and Telah Black (Auburn); Ashley Lambert (Nebraska) and assistant coach Chris Iicameli (SEMO) among others.

LIU expands roster with transfers

Bridgeport sophomores Amanda Loo and Katy Koopman quietly changed their Instagram bios to state their transfers to LIU, where they will join Purple Knight classmate Nika Takagi, who announced her transfer earlier. Denver’s Emma Brown will also be a Shark, rounding out what we know of the sophomore class for now. 

Athletes hit the gym

Many states have reopened recreational facilities in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. We’ve seen gymnasts getting back to work across the country. Shift Movement Science has noted that the sudden return to training can be a high injury risk.

Jennifer Green named Air Force head coach

Iowa assistant coach Jennifer Green will take the helm in Colorado Springs, taking over from interim head coach Jennifer Langley. Green was the primary beam coach for the Hawkeyes.

Other Newsworthy Items

  • Michigan’s Sierra Brooks spoke about her experiences as a black athlete with SeeUsMovement.com. Teammate Gabby Wilson posted a video about her experiences, including anti-racism resources.
  • UCLA’s Margzetta Frazier explained that athletes should not be put in boxes according to their skin color on BBC Sport.  

Training Updates

  • Nebraska junior Sarah Hargrove posted a video of a Ray to her Instagram story, noting that it has been seven months since she last trained the skill due to injury.
  • Kaylee Quinn, who is transferring from Nebraska to Alabama, posted a video of herself running on a treadmill. Quinn missed all but the first meet of 2020 with a knee injury.

Hi Kaiser, We posted across our social media platforms and decided we didn’t want to add an extra step in sending people to important sites like the petition by making them come to our site first, just to get page views or other vanity metrics that would only selfishly boost our own clout. We’re also working on a feature on the program and it being cut in an effort to highlight the situation and individual gymnasts as well. Unfortunately, these features take time, so that’s why you haven’t seen anything published in the last two days since the program being cut was announced.
