Can’t-Miss Matchups
No. 2 Florida at No. 10 Georgia
When You Need to Tell Your Friends You’re Busy: Friday, February 28 at 7:00 PM ET on SECN
Why You Should Cancel Plans For It: Georgia should be coming out rejuvenated after a much needed win against Kentucky. The Gymdogs won this meet by a hair last season, but they’ll need a bigger margin than that to come close to Florida. Having gone 197-plus on the road last week, they definitely have what it takes. The Gators have locked up the SEC regular season title, but they’ll surely still come out swinging for this marquee SEC matchup.
What We’re Watching: Will Sabrina Vega remain in the all around after competing all four events these past few weeks? If so, the race for that title should be compelling with Trinity Thomas also in the mix.
What Else You Should Know Before Tuning In: It’s a “House Divided” meet in which sisters Alyssa and Rachel Baumann will compete for opposing teams; definitely watch Instagram afterward for the cute moments (like this one last year).
No. 6 Denver at No. 1 Oklahoma
When You Need to Tell Your Friends You’re Busy: Saturday, February 29 at 12:30 PM ET on ESPNU
Why You Should Cancel Plans For It: It’s a Big 12 showdown you won’t want to miss. Oklahoma is, as usual, one of the top teams in the country. The Sooners are coming off a 197.650 that will leave them wanting more after a record-breaking week before. Oklahoma was without Maggie Nichols, who is dealing with an ankle injury and won’t be back anytime soon, according to head coach KJ Kindler. It managed without her, which is a testament to just how good Oklahoma is, but her presence in the lineups is certainly missed. Meanwhile, Denver struggled mightily a week after losing Lynnzee Brown. The newness of the Pioneers’ lineups was evident, and how this team evolves going forward is worth watching for. It’s our last look at these two teams head to head before the Big 12 championship. It may not be as close as one would have thought at the beginning of the season, but it should be a great meet nevertheless.
What We’re Watching: The all around battle between Denver’s Maddie Karr and Oklahoma’s Anastasia Webb is one to watch. The two are currently ranked three and four nationally, with Karr having the edge. Beam is something to keep an eye on as well; especially watch for Denver’s Alexis Vasquez and Oklahoma’s Carly Woodard. Ragan Smith has proven to be a great asset for the Sooners, especially on bars, beam and floor. Junior Karrie Thomas returned to the bars lineup last week for Oklahoma after being out a few weeks.
What Else You Should Know Before Tuning In: It’s a good opportunity for fans to watch both teams, as it is a national broadcast whereas many of each teams’ meets are on hard-to-access networks. It’ll also be a mini Twin City Twisters reunion between Maddie Karr, Olivia Trautman and Maggie Nichols.
Meets You Didn’t Know You Should Be Interested In
No. 36 Western Michigan at No. 37 Central Michigan
When the Meet’s Happening: Friday, February 28th at 7:00 ET on ESPN3
Why You Should See the Error of Your Ways: Western Michigan pulled ahead of Central Michigan this week when NQS kicked in, and it is the only MAC team currently in a regionals play-off position. (For reference, the last time Western Michigan went to Regionals was in 1982.) The Broncos are undefeated in the MAC, but their two remaining conference dual meets are tough ones: Central Michigan this weekend and Kent State next. The Chippewas will be eager to do well here; they have been underperforming this season and are capable of much bigger scores.
Need More Proof? A win here would put the Broncos just one meet away from achieving a perfect conference record for the first time in program history. Central Michigan senior Denelle Pedrick is currently ranked 13th in the all around and brings a high level of difficulty to her routines. Both Central Michigan and Western Michigan have some standout routines on beam as well: Morgan Tong for the Chippewas and Amelia Mohler for the Broncos are capable of big scores on the event.
No. 11 Minnesota, No. 31 Ohio State and No. 48 Lindenwood at No. 20 Missouri
When the Meet’s Happening: Friday, February 28th at 8:00 ET on ESPN+
Why You Should See the Error of Your Ways: Minnesota is coming off of a lackluster showing at Big Fives, where a shaky beam rotation (including a fall from Ivy Lu) and a limited Ona Loper resulted in a more depressed score than usual. While the Gophers are favored to win here, it is far from guaranteed. Missouri is coming off a season high against LSU last week and will be more than capable of taking advantage of an average performance from Minnesota if it has a hit meet. Ohio State and Lindenwood are both coming off of season high performances last week as well. Don’t dismiss the Buckeyes here, who showed they are capable of a mid 196 with their showing at Big Fives. Lindenwood only has two away meets remaining, and due to a slow start to the season needs to lock in a good score stat.
Need More Proof? Missouri has yet to crack 197 this season despite coming close and will definitely be aiming for it here. Lexy Ramler is knocking on the door of a perfect 10 on bars with two 9.975s in 2020; if achieved, it would be the first perfect 10 on bars in program history. Speaking of bars, watch for Ohio State there—it is currently ranked in the top 20 on that event, with notable routines from Olivia Aepli, Jenna Swartzentruber and Colby Miller. Lindenwood senior Emily Milliet made her return to beam last week and is a key contributor there for the Lions. Plus, you have the opportunity to watch Lexy Ramler and Helen Hu face off at the same meet. Need we say more?
Meets You Should at Least Record and Watch Later
No. 3 UCLA at No. 18 Oregon State
When to Find It on the TV Guide: Saturday, February 29 at 4:00 p.m. ET on Pac-12 Network
Why You Should Clear Space on Your DVR: UCLA is coming off of a hard fought loss last weekend, but it put up a season high that it will be hoping to build upon. Oregon State suffered back-to-back dual meet losses and will look to capitalize on this home meet to potentially stop that streak and notch a high score to boost its NQS total.
What to Look for If you Missed It: Kyla Ross posted a whopping 39.825 in the all around last weekend, leading the Bruins on three events. Grace Glenn will also be hoping to follow up her first career 10 with another here. The Beavers’ Isis Lowery and Kaitlyn Yanish have been a strong duo at the end of the floor rotation for Oregon State; they will look to compliment Madi Dagen who won three events in last week’s loss.
No. 4 Utah at No. 13 Washington
When to Find It on the TV Guide: Sunday, March 1 at 5:00 p.m. ET on Pac-12 Network
Why You Should Clear Space on Your DVR: Both teams enter this matchup undefeated in Pac-12 conference action, so the winner of this meet will likely lift the conference regular season trophy. Washington’s scores have been building the last few weeks, so it is primed to put up a good score at home to challenge the Utes, who are coming off of an impressive win over UCLA on the road.
What to Look for If you Missed It: Utah freshman Abby Paulson scored her first perfect 10 on beam last weekend, so look for her to lead the beam rotation that ranks third in the nation. Kim Tessen has also been impressive for the Utes on vault and bars this season and has the potential to add floor back into her repertoire as well. Washington also has a beamer—Evanni Roberson—who has scored a perfect 10 this season, and floor anchor Kristyn Hoffa has been stellar on the event all season long.
