LIVE BLOG: No. 28 North Carolina and No. 49 Temple at No. 31 Pittsburgh

It’s Mary Emma here again from the University of Pittsburgh for another exciting gymnastics matchup! This time, Pittsburgh is hosting EAGL rival North Carolina as well as Temple.

Pitt and North Carolina have been going back and forth with each other in the rankings, so it’s going to be interesting to see which one comes out on top. North Carolina has some of the top floor workers in the country, so that’s a rotation you won’t want to miss!

Temple may be ranked lower than the other teams at this meet, but don’t count it out! A couple of not-so-good meets have lowered Temple’s average, but on a good day, the Owls should be scoring right alongside the other two.

Rotation 1

Pitt: vault; UNC: bars; Temple: beam

Spivey (Pitt) – big y full with just a small slide back. Great start!

Looks like Ruzicka had a fall on bars, just got back up and finished nicely.

Miller (Pitt) – nice y full with a small step

Herbine (Pitt) – y half with a step

Williams – nice jaeger, looks a little short on bail, and stuck DLO! Way to recover!

Brechwald (Pitt) – y full with a small bounce

Bochenek (Pitt) – y full with a step back

Estrella (Temple) – wobble on full turn, side aerial is nice, nice BHS LOSO series, and sticks dismount!

Petrikis (Pitt) – y full with a step back

White (UNC) – nice jaeger, little short on bail, large bounce forward on dismount.

Castrence (Temple) – missed the beginning, series is nice, and a small step on dismount

Donaghy (UNC) – falls on jaeger, UNC counting a fall now, rest of the routine is nice.

Dewhurst (UNC) – nice shaposh, bail looks a little short, and stuck dismount!

Servido (Temple) – very nice triple series, great routine so far! And nearly sticks dismount. Great beam rotation for Temple.

After 1: Temple 48.875; Pitt 48.725; North Carolina 47.350

Rotation 3

Bochenek (Pitt) – nice gienger to start, small step on dismount

Fuchs (Temple) – 2.5 is good, good front lay to front full, missed the end but good finish based on team cheers

Miller (Pitt) – nice piked jaeger, and step on dismount.

Collins (Pitt) – good bail, tkatchev is nice, and small hop on dismount

Newland (Temple) – good double pike to start, last pass has too much power and has to shuffle back. Not sure if she stayed in bounds or not.

Dugan (Pitt) – good gienger, goes over on cast and then falls on bail, small step on dismount

Everett (Temple) – nice high double pike, but I think went OOB? (not sure if it was quite out or not) final pass is very nicely controlled.

Brett (Pitt) – huge gienger, good on bail, and STICK on DLO!

Hislop (UNC) – gorgeous leaps, and I missed the rest because I was watching Brett, but looked like a hit

Dewhurst (UNC) – good on full turn, wobble on series but saves it, small step on gainer full

Castrence (Temple) – huge DLO and OOB, very fun routine, and nice on last pass. Good routine except for the OOB

DeCicco (UNC) – great BHS LOSO series, slight wobble on leap series but covers, sticks gainer pike to finish

I Anderson (Temple) – great double pike to start, leaps are beautiful, very nice double, and a great rudi to finish!

After 2: Temple 97.025, UNC 96.150, Pitt 95.600

Temple had lots of huge floor routines, but just couldn’t control the landings and had too many out of bounds. Pitt unfortunately had to count the 8.2 from Dugan because they were still only able to put 5 up on bars. I did see a sixth person on bars while the rest of the team was on beam, so hopefully Pitt can get a 6th person in the lineup soon. I missed most of beam, but looked like a good rotation for UNC.

Rotation 3

Eubanks (Temple) – big y full, slight chest down and takes a step

Miller (Pitt) – good leaps to one arm BHS, wobble on series but saves it, nice front aerial, small hop on dismount

Robinson (UNC) – great double pike to open, great second pass, I really love her choreography, and finished with a great double back

Estrella (Temple) – good y full with a step

Brechwald (Pitt) – solid front aerial to BHS, great so far, and small hop on gainer pike dismount

Everett (Temple) – good y full with just a small step

Castrence (Temple) – Y 1.5 with a rather large bounce foward

Robatin (Pitt) – solid front aerial to BHS, nice front toss to scale, and small hop on gainer tucked full

Antinori (UNC) – great double pike to open, 1.5 to front flay is good, and finished with a nice double back

Brett (Pitt) – great leaps to start, great series, wobble on illusion turn but saves it, and small step on dismount

Dean (UNC) – great double back to open, missed the middle, but finishes with a sky high double pike

Herbine (Pitt) – nice BHS LOSO series, great punch front, step on dismount

Hislop (UNC) – huge front lay to front full to open, she gets so much air! huge double back to finish

West (Pitt) – great leaps, slight wobble on series but covers well, and step on dismount

Hargrave (UNC) – nice front double full to open, great double pike, good 1.5 to front lay to close

After 3: Temple 145.950; UNC 145.075; Pitt 144.700

Pitt had a great bounce back from bars to break a 49 on beam! UNC put together some good floor routines as usual. Hislop and Robinson were definitely the highlights for me.

Rotation 4

Ceccarini (Pitt) – nice double back to start, great front lay to front full to end

Aldridge (UNC) – big y full with a small bounce back

Allen (UNC) – y half with a small step back

Robatin (Pitt) – great double back to start, and a nice front lay to front full to finish

Robinson (UNS) – big yfull with a small bounce

Hargrave (UNC) – balked on first attempt. Gets to try again and does a great y full with a small bounce back

Miller (Pitt) – great double pike to open, and a nice double back for second pass, this is such a fun routine! and nice finish. I think she must have fallen though, but I missed it.

Hislop (UNC) – HUGE y full with just a small shuffle back. GREAT!

Castrence (Temple) – nice tkatchev, little short on bail, and hop on dismount

Estrella (Temple) – huge tkatchev, pak is good, small step on DLO

Bochenek (Pitt) – nice rudi to open, great double pike, and nice finish

FYI, I have a hard time seeing the Pitt floor routines since the team is standing right in front of me, so I may miss things, but I’m trying my best with what I can see.

Petrikis (Pitt) – good double pike to start, front lay to front full is nice, and a great double back to finish.

Spivey (Pitt) – nice 2.5 to front tuck to open, good double back, and a nice rudi to close. Great way to finish!

Final: Temple 194.300; UNC 194.050; Pitt 193.550

Well Temple comes up with the upset! It was the only team who did have to count a fall and I think also hit 24 for 24. Just need to work on not going OOB on floor so much, but that’s not a hard fix. Pitt bounced back well from a rough bars rotation to finish strong on beam and floor. UNC is not going to be happy with having to count a fall on bars, but the other three rotations were great!
