Leotard Rankings: Week Six

There weren’t too many leos this week we didn’t like, which made the competition for the top spot all that more fierce. From lucky leotards that led to upsets to simple but fierce, there were a lot of unique designs on the competition floor.

As always, we’ve got some simple criteria for judging the leos: up to three points for design; two points for fabric, sparkle, etc.; and two points for school spirit; three points for overall appearance. We’ll be looking at leotards we saw that caught our eye — in either a good way or a bad one. Then we’ll tally up the scores and average them with the previous week’s. So by the end of the season, we’ll know for sure which team has the best leotards (according to us) and which teams not to much. We want to know what you thought too (or if we forgot one of your favorites from this weekend)! Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter.

This leo is just great. They design is very busy, so sticking to the simply black with silver was a great choice. It looked great on the girls, no weird cut outs or necklines, and hit all my checkmarks.  Great job.

So this is the same design as Florida’s new pink leo but with silver. I like this version so much better. You can actually tell what the design is and the silver really pops. It looks great with the black and it’s not too sparkly. Denver almost always hits it out of the park with its leos, and this is no exception.

I’ve seen this leo more than a few times, but this is definitely my favorite version.  Washington had this leo at the Metroplex challenge but had yellow on top and it was a disaster.  This one looks so good with the purple mesh and the embellishments add to the design.  Love it.

I really liked LSU’s leo. The purple mesh color was so pretty. I kind of wish the body was deep purple instead of black, but it still looked good. The back has been done a lot before by many teams, but I liked it all the same. There wasn’t too much sparkle and it looked nice in person. Fun fact: Ashleigh Gnat’s old club gym has the same leo this season.

The lattice is very rennaisance festival to me, but much better than the OU leo from last week.  Nice details on the sleeves and a good fabric make this leo work well.

I really like this one. The yellow lines aren’t obnoxious yellow and the design makes the girls look athletic and its flattering at the same time. The mesh is done well too and the blue color is pretty. I also like the sparkly Block Ms near the cuff.

This is another nice Cal leo… a bit too much silver for my liking but well done.  The color scheme is on point and the design doesn’t rely on random swirls or patches to make it interesting. Good work Cal!

This is like the reverse of the other Cal leo that I loved. It’s really pretty, but a step below the beloved blue with white. I love the color of the mesh sleeves and the navy sides are a nice touch too. I like the subtle Script Cal on the back in rhinestones but the weird feeler things on the back are slightly out of place but makes the back not boring, so that’s good. I like the design on the front too. Not too much.

I love that green color. But the way the nude extends to the back is weird. If it stopped at the sleeve, I would like it better. The shiny white looks good and overall the design is nice. It’s definitely an unusual leo.

This is one of my favorite Stanford leos. The Cardinal are usually dressed pretty plain, so this is a nice change. I like how the two colors aren’t different fabrics but sort of blend together. The red mesh sleeve is also a really nice shade of red. And now that I know the zig-zaggy design of the red and sparkles makes a tree, thanks to Casey, I love it even more. That’s super creative.

This is better Utah. Much improved from the camp fire leo last week.  Not too complicated, not too simple.  Just enough to please the eye.  Not very unique, but I’ll take this over that craziness of last week any day.

I prefer it to an upper back cutout because there are no bra issues.  Reminds me of some of the cut outs you see on a competition swimsuit. I don’t like the colors ASU has as a school… but they make them work very well together on this.  It was very nicely put together.

This leo is funky. I’m always one for back cutouts, but I wish this one’s was a bit higher and not in tramp stamp territory. I like the white and maroon and gold colors mixed together.

I prefer white mesh on Oklahoma leos, but kudos for mixing things up. I love the shininess of the red and the fact that it’s not just nude mesh but has sparkles on it. The tramp stamp is kind of weird, but I don’t hate it — shows up better than if it were on the nude.

This is a design that’s so overdone by so many teams and not just those in college but JO and elite too. But I think it’s my favorite of all the similar ones to it. There’s a lot of sparkle, but I think that’s what I like about it. The white arm also works and the red color is pretty.

The blue on this leo is perfect.  I can’t get enough.  I’m glad they kept it simple to highlight that fabric.  The firework A is fine, but I wish the letter was bigger.

This is so not an Arizona, but I’m not complaining. It’s very tame compared to most of its others. I don’t like how the chest/shoulders are two different colors of blue. And not even that but the color change is so subtle, at first I though one of the girls spilled something on herself. The mesh sleeves are fine and better than some, but it’s almost too plain for me?

This one is a good take on the fire/swirls/butterfly designs. I am still not a fan of the swirlyness, but this is acceptable. I like how the white flowery thing divides the orange from the blue. Wish the navy was a bit brighter though.

Kudos to Auburn for mixing things up. There’s a bit too much orange for me, but it’s a nice change from allllll that navy leos the team has. I like the mesh parts and the solid navy thrown in as an accent. I don’t like the white design, though.

I appreciate Georgia working that G into every leo… but this one is just trying a bit too hard.  It comes off at a bit boring and the trash bag black fabric isn’t a winner.

I like the school spirit on this one. The way the white and red ribbons snake into the Super G is neat. The arms and back were kind of meh for me — nothing super exciting about them — but overall it was a solid ensemble.

Weird. I don’t get the rhinestone design on the front and the huge white block of fabric is too much. The detailing around the shoulders and the transition from white to black is good though. I also like the cursive Nebraska on the back but overall, this is weird but not cool-weird like some of Nebraska’s other leos.

The cut is very unflattering.  The line of crystals just below the bust is so strange.  It’s like they have on a Britney Spears “Oops I Did It Again” turtle neck crop top. I do like the teardrop back cut out though!

Nope. The blue color is really pretty, but that’s basically the only thing I like about this leo. Kentucky tried to hang with the cool kids and bring lace to the party, but this was just weird. I don’t like the sweater-over-a-shirt look and the neckline is WAY too high. I would hate competing with basically a turtleneck on.
