January 26 Power Rankings

Rankings are starting to shape up but are still all over the place. So get ready for the third power rankings of the season. This week we put teams into tiers based on what character from Harry Potter their 2016 season resembles. Let’s not stall any longer. Here are our January 26 rankings. Let us know who you have in your top 15 and what Harry Potter characters you think they take after in the comments or on Twitter.

Hermione Granger

  1. Florida
  2. Oklahoma

These teams have it going on. They’ve been there, done that and are showing they’ll be right in the mix yet again. Like Hermione’s I-can-master-everything-but-a-patronus-charm attitude, both Florida and Oklahoma aren’t wasting any time showing people they’re in it to win it this year.

Neville Longbottom

  1. Michigan
  2. UCLA

Neville was the kid that just couldn’t ever win. He was always on the outside looking in. So far this season, Michigan has definitely taken on that role. It’s stuck at 196.9 and left looking on as Florida and Oklahoma play with 197s/defeat Voldemort. UCLA is in a similar position. The Bruins have what it takes but one thing each time keeps them from the top. Maybe it’s vault landings or maybe it’s losing their rememberall or getting the full body bind curse put on them. But as we all know, Neville becomes super hot and kills the Nagini in heroic fashion in the end. It’s yet to be seen whether the Wolverines or Bruins follow that same path.

Harry Potter
5. LSULSU is the chosen one. A lot of people picked the Tigers to win it all last year before a little thing called The Event That Must Not Be Named got in the way. Now they’re back this year to give it another go. Will it be luck that gives the team the title? Will it take seven books — er, years — before the Tigers finally win their first crown. Or will LSU finally fulfil its prophecy and join the exclusive NCAA champion club?

Severus Snape
6. Alabama
7. Utah
8. StanfordAll three of these teams are ones that always seem to come out of nowhere and do really well. Just like Snape had actually been a good guy “after all this time”, the Tide, Utes and Cardinal start slow and end up performing well in the postseason, shocking a lot of people. However, they haven’t made it all the way to the top (recently in Alabama and Utah’s cases), never fully getting what they truly desire.

Ron Weasley
9. Arkansas
10. Auburn
11. Missouri
12. Oregon StateYou can’t help but pull for these teams. Just like you can’t help pulling for Ron, whether it was with Hermione, at keeper tryouts or during their time on the run from Voldemort in The Deathly Hallows. The Razorbacks surprised pretty much everyone when they upset Alabama at home, beating the Tide for the first time ever in Tuscaloosa and picking up their second W in a row. Missouri has two upsets to its name already in 2016, topping both Penn State and Georgia so far. Oregon State and Auburn haven’t had any upsets per say but are similar teams to Arkansas and Missouri.

Nymphadora Tonks
13. Georgia
14. NebraskaTonks was always messing things up and knocking things over. She was a brilliant auror but was clumsy as all get out. Likewise, Georgia is phenomenal on vault this year and pretty darn good on bars and floor, but beam has been a disaster. Nebraska landed itself outside the top 25 after the first week but has been battling back since then, showing much improvement and increased depth.

Fred and George Weasley
15. Boise StateEvery time we think about Boise State, we can’t help but think of that lone first-place vote it got in the preseason poll. We’re surprised the team didn’t sprout beards after the vote slipped into the Goblet of Fire. It was such a Fred and George move that that’s pretty much the only reason the Broncos sit in the twins’ tier. But in all seriousness, the Broncos have done well in their two meets so far this season, earning a place in our top 15.
