The Mount: Week 0

The NCAA gymnastics season is HERE! So it’s time for our first installment of “The Mount.” Each week we’ll choose a handful of notable competitions and pick who we think the winner will be. But we don’t want to be the only ones picking. We want to hear your opinions too! So play along by answering who you think will win each matchup by participating in the polls. And if you feel strongly about your choices, feel free to let us know in the comments below.

Since New Year’s fell on a weird day this year, most teams’ seasons don’t start until next weekend. But there is one big competition for gym fans to look forward to.

The Cancun Classic will officially kick off the 2016 season. While we’re not expecting much live coverage from the event, it’s still exciting that after months and months of waiting, NCAA gymnastics is BACK. In Mexico, Michigan will look to show its intersquad against Eastern Michigan — where it only managed a 183 — was just a fluke and will never ever happen again. Those illnesses and nagging injuries from December should be all but gone. It’ll also be the first look at freshman Olivia Karas who competed all four events at that competition and scored a more-than-acceptable 39.250. Arkansas will be looking to get back to the form it was in a few years back. With a one-two punch in junior Amanda Wellick and sophomore Paige Zaziski, the Razorbacks should be able to keep pace with Wolverines if they don’t have a meltdown. We’re not expecting perfection from the start, but sloppiness isn’t going to fly this season either. As for Iowa, it’ll be a great #opportunity for the Hawkeyes to compete against two other great programs and have a bit of fun at this international meet. But in all seriousness, the team’s been looking good in fall training, according to what it’s put up on Snapchat, so it shouldn’t be as distant a third-place finish as some might expect. While no live scoring will be available for the meet, it will be live streamed on FloGymnastics starting at 7:15 p.m. We’ll also be providing quick hits on Storify here. Follow along during the competition if you are unable to watch or catchup after the fact.

Emily: I think Michigan should win this meet fairly easily. After finishing seventh last year, the Wolverines return top performers like Nicole Artz and Brianna Brown in addition to their a strong freshman class. Arkansas and Iowa are both teams that seem to be on the rise, but, as of now, will still not be a serious challenge to the top teams.
Elizabeth: Despite the somewhat close ranking and Michigan’s abysmal intersquad against Eastern Michigan, I’ve got to go with the Wolverines. But Arkansas could keep it close if Michigan still has lingering injuries or illnesses.
This isn’t the only meet happening this weekend! To see all the matchups all in one place, take a look at ourmaster schedule. You can also find live scoring and video links below.
